Chapter 1 – The Sound Nobody Else Heard

The orchestra filled the mansion with elegant music.

Crystal chandeliers scattered golden light across the marble floor.

Laughter echoed through every hallway.

Hundreds of New York's wealthiest guests celebrated another successful Sterling Foundation gala.

Only the staff moved without being noticed.

Grace Moreno balanced a silver tray of empty champagne glasses against her hip.

She had worked inside the Ashford estate for nearly twelve years.

She knew every hallway.

Every staircase.

Every hidden storage room.

She also knew something else.

Old houses had their own voices.

Pipes groaned.

Wood settled.

Windows rattled when the wind shifted.

Tonight...

Something sounded different.

A whisper.

So soft it barely existed.

Grace paused.

She turned her head toward the east corridor.

Nothing.

A passing waiter brushed beside her.

"Grace."

"We need more glasses in the ballroom."

She smiled politely.

"I'll be right there."

She continued walking.

Then she heard it again.

A tiny voice.

"...please..."

Her feet stopped.

Every hair on her arms stood upright.

The voice had not come from upstairs.

It had not come from outside.

It had come from inside the walls.

Grace slowly walked toward the abandoned servants' hallway that had been closed since the previous owner died six years earlier.

The music faded behind her.

The farther she walked...

The colder the air became.

Dust covered furniture hidden beneath white sheets.

Old portraits watched from cracked walls.

The mansion suddenly felt much older than it had only moments before.

Another whisper.

"...don't leave me..."

Grace froze.

She knew that voice.

Not because she had heard it often.

Because she had heard it only once.

Three weeks earlier.

The night ten-year-old Oliver Ashford disappeared.

The police searched the entire estate.

Divers searched the lake.

Dogs searched the surrounding woods.

Nothing.

The newspapers declared the boy missing.

His stepmother insisted he had probably run away.

His father...

Billionaire Nathan Ashford...

Had nearly collapsed during the press conference.

Grace never believed Oliver would abandon his father.

He adored him.

Something had never made sense.

Tonight...

The impossible was speaking through the walls.

Grace followed the sound until she reached an enormous antique bookshelf.

It stretched from floor to ceiling.

She frowned.

She cleaned this hallway every Monday.

That bookshelf had never been there before.

She stepped closer.

Fresh scratches marked the marble beneath it.

It had been moved recently.

Very recently.

Grace pressed one hand against the carved oak.

It shifted.

Only an inch.

But it shifted.

Her heartbeat pounded inside her ears.

Someone had hidden something.

Or someone.

She pushed harder.

The bookshelf rolled silently on concealed steel tracks.

A narrow passage appeared behind it.

Cold air rushed outward.

The smell made Grace cover her nose.

Concrete.

Moisture.

Bleach.

And something else.

Fear.

A single dim light flickered somewhere below.

Stone steps disappeared into darkness.

Then...

A tiny cough echoed upward.

Followed by the trembling voice.

"Please..."

"Is somebody there?"

Grace swallowed hard.

"I'm here."

"My name is Grace."

"I'm coming."

She stepped onto the first stair.

Above her...

The orchestra reached the loudest part of the evening.

May you like

Below her...

Someone quietly began to cry.
