Chapter 9 - The Dead Man

Officially, Dr. Rafael Serrano had died in a private plane crash over the Atlantic.

No body had ever been recovered.

Diego had attended the memorial.

Paulina had cried beside the empty coffin.

Now police reopened everything.

The plane had been registered through a shell company.

The pilot disappeared six months later.

Insurance money had never been claimed.

Rafael Serrano had not died.

He had vanished.

Diego confronted Paulina at the mansion.

“Where is your father?”

Paulina laughed.

“My father is dead.”

“Elena saw him.”

“Elena is a liar.”

“She recorded everything.”

Paulina’s expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You knew.”

Diego said it quietly.

Paulina turned away.

“You knew he was alive.”

She said nothing.

“Why?”

Paulina finally faced him.

“Because he promised me something.”

“What?”

“The company.”

Diego stared at her.

She laughed bitterly.

“You think I wanted to marry into this family because I loved the chandeliers?”

“I spent nine years watching you control everything.”

“My father told me the twins were the only thing standing between us and permanent control.”

Marisol entered the room.

Paulina looked at her.

“You were supposed to disappear.”

Marisol stopped.

Paulina continued.

“Valentina was never supposed to come back.”

Diego’s voice turned cold.

“And Lucia?”

Paulina looked toward the window.

“Neither was she.”

Police immediately moved toward her.

Paulina smiled.

“You’re too late.”

Diego frowned.

“For what?”

She looked upstairs.

Valentina and Lucia were supposed to be in Diego’s private sitting room with Elena.

Diego ran.

The room was empty.

The window stood open.

On the carpet lay one golden button.

And beside it was a note.

Bring the trust documents to Pier 17.

Come alone.

Or choose which daughter comes home.
