Chapter 5 - The Man Diego Trusted

Security chief Mateo Vargas had worked for Diego for twelve years.

He had protected him through threats, kidnappings, lawsuits, and two attempted robberies.

Diego had trusted him with his life.

Mateo slowly lifted his hands.

“The girl is confused.”

Lucia stepped behind Marisol.

“You were at Elena’s house.”

Mateo shook his head.

“I’ve never seen you before.”

“You wore a gray cap.”

“That could be anyone.”

“You have a scar behind your left ear.”

Mateo stopped moving.

Diego’s eyes shifted toward him.

Mateo’s hair covered most of the area.

Diego stepped closer.

“Show me.”

“Diego.”

“Show me.”

Mateo refused.

Diego reached toward him.

Mateo suddenly shoved him backward.

Then everything happened at once.

A guard moved.

Mateo struck him.

Marisol dragged the girls behind a marble pillar.

Mateo ran toward the service corridor.

Diego followed.

They crashed through the kitchen.

Mateo knocked over a metal cart.

Diego jumped across it.

Mateo reached the loading entrance.

Two firefighters were outside.

He changed direction.

Diego tackled him near the pantry.

They hit the floor hard.

Mateo swung.

Diego blocked it.

The guards arrived seconds later.

They restrained Mateo.

Diego knelt beside him.

“Who paid you?”

Mateo laughed.

“You think this is about Paulina?”

“Who?”

Mateo looked toward the foyer.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

“The twins weren’t supposed to survive.”

Diego grabbed his collar.

“Who ordered it?”

Mateo smiled.

“Ask your mother.”

Diego released him.

His mother had been living in Madrid for seven years.

She rarely returned to the estate.

She had called that morning.

She had told him she was flying home.

Her plane was scheduled to land in less than an hour.
