Chapter 7 - Elena Cruz

Diego drove to San Miguel before sunrise.
Marisol insisted on going.
Lucia refused to stay behind.
Valentina refused to leave Lucia.
So all four went together with two police detectives.
The old convent stood beyond an abandoned vineyard.
The front door was open.
Lucia ran inside.
âElena!â
No answer.
âElena!â
They found blood on the kitchen floor.
But no body.
One detective discovered tire tracks behind the building.
Marisol hugged Lucia.
Diego searched the rooms.
In Elenaâs bedroom, he found a recorder hidden beneath a loose floorboard.
Lucia recognized it.
âShe said that was for you.â
Diego pressed play.
Elenaâs voice filled the room.
âIf you are hearing this, they found me.â
Lucia began crying silently.
Marisol held her.
Elena continued.
âNine years ago, Marisol Robles delivered twin girls.â
âBoth were healthy.â
âI was ordered to falsify the records and declare one infant deceased.â
Diego closed his eyes.
âThe order came through Dr. Rafael Serrano.â
Paulinaâs father.
Diego opened his eyes.
Elena continued.
âRafael told me the Villaseñor family wanted the children erased.â
âI believed him.â
âLater, I discovered Rafael had his own reason.â
âHe knew the Villaseñor trust.â
âHe knew the first biological heir would eventually control the family voting shares.â
Marisol looked at Diego.
Elenaâs voice trembled.
âRafael intended to remove both girls.â
âI returned Valentina to Marisol before she left the hospital.â
âI took Lucia myself.â
âI have regretted separating them every day since.â
Lucia buried her face against Marisol.
Then Elena said something none of them expected.
âDiego, your father was cruel.â
âBut he did not order the children killed.â
Diego looked at the handwritten note.
Then at the recorder.
Elena continued.
âThe note was altered.â
âThe original order said, âRemove the second child from the public record.ââ
âIt did not say âNo scandal.ââ
âAnd it certainly did not order anyone harmed.â
âSomeone changed the document later.â
Diego whispered.
âRafael.â
Elena answered from nine years in the past.
âRafael Serrano.â
A floorboard creaked behind them.
Diego turned.
May you like
The bedroom door slammed shut.
Smoke began pouring beneath it.
