Chapter 7 - CLAIRE’S LAST WARNING

Claire Donnelly’s sister, Megan, met Rachel at the station. Lorenzo came at Megan’s request; she wanted to see the man whose wife had been buried under Claire’s name.

Megan didn’t shake his hand.

“Did you know my sister?” she asked.

“No.”

“She called me the night she disappeared. Said she’d found something at work and was taking it to a woman named Isabella.”

Lorenzo felt Rachel turn toward him.

Claire coordinated events for several companies, including Vincent’s private hospitality firm. Invoices from that firm appeared among the North Pier records Isabella had been checking.

Megan showed them Claire’s last voicemail.

“I’m meeting her tomorrow,” Claire said on the recording. Traffic hummed behind her. “If I’m right, somebody’s billing for entire crews that never showed up. I made copies. Call you after.”

She never did.

Lorenzo swallowed. “I’m sorry.”

Megan put the phone away. “Find out what happened to her. That’s what I want.”

Rachel traced the meeting location to a diner near the highway where Isabella’s car later crashed. Security footage showed Isabella and Claire leaving separately. Forty minutes later, a traffic camera caught Isabella’s car heading north. The driver’s face was hidden by glare.

Claire’s phone traveled the same route, then went dead.

That evening, Rachel obtained the original tow and emergency response records. One tow driver had reported seeing tire marks from a second vehicle near the broken guardrail. The note never appeared in the final incident summary.

“Who removed it?” Lorenzo asked.

“We’re finding out.”

Mason arrived with a photograph recovered from Isabella’s cloud storage. It showed an open blue notebook filled with dates, initials, and payment totals. On the last visible page, Claire had written a name beside a large transfer:

V. MOREAU — APPROVED.

Beneath it was another line.

ANTHONY VALE — CASH PICKUP.

Mason recognized the name. Anthony had worked on Lorenzo’s security team until six months earlier.

His phone rang again. He listened, then lowered it.

“Anthony Vale just checked into an airport hotel,” he said. “He has a one-way ticket out of the country.”
