Chapter 13 - WHAT ANTHONY LEFT OUT

Anthony’s new statement described the minutes before the crash. Investigators checked it against traffic footage, tire marks, phone records, and evidence recovered from the car.

He and another man had taken Claire after she saw Isabella being forced into the SUV. Anthony said Claire was still breathing when they put her in Isabella’s car. He had followed the car toward the road where it crashed. He knew who was driving.

For weeks, he had refused to say the man’s name.

Rachel did not promise him anything for finally telling it. She wrote down his answer, then sent officers to find the second contractor.

The contractor was arrested two days later. His account differed from Anthony’s in places, but both statements led investigators to further evidence. Prosecutors would have to prove each person’s part in Claire’s death.

Lorenzo attended the first court hearing. Megan sat across the aisle. He wanted to tell her what he had learned, but she had already heard it from Rachel. He left her in peace.

At home, Isabella struggled with ordinary sounds. A door locking made her stop mid-sentence. A car idling outside kept her awake. Lorenzo offered to replace every lock and every vehicle on the property.

“That won’t help,” she said.

“Tell me what will.”

“Ask before you change things.”

He sat beside her. “All right.”

She looked at him, surprised by how quickly he answered.

They began meeting with a therapist. Sometimes Lorenzo listened well. Sometimes fear made him issue orders before Isabella had finished speaking. When that happened, she told him. He learned to stop.

One night, she found her funeral program in his bedside drawer. She stared at her own smiling face and the dates printed beneath it.

“You kept this?”

“I couldn’t throw it away.”

Isabella laughed once, then started crying. Lorenzo held her while Bruno rested his head against her knee.

The next morning, Mason called with news from the company’s independent auditors. The losses were real. The controls that had let Vincent hide them ran much deeper than one bad contract.

Lorenzo looked at Isabella across the breakfast table.

“I have to change how the company works,” he said.

“Yes,” she replied. “You do.”
