Chapter 12 - THE FILES CLAIRE SAVED

The lawyer was unharmed. He had seen the intruder on his office camera and called police before anyone reached the room where Isabella’s files were kept.
Those files filled gaps in Claire’s ledger. They showed fake staffing charges, inflated freight bills, and payments routed through companies connected to Vincent. Claire had noticed crews being billed for events and port jobs on days when no work took place.
Isabella had taken the documents to an independent lawyer because she knew Vincent would hear about an internal company review. Claire agreed to meet her and bring the original ledger.
Neither woman reached the lawyer’s office that day.
With Isabella’s testimony, Anthony’s statement, financial records, and Paul’s messages, prosecutors brought charges against Vincent and several others. Police arrested Vincent at an airport hotel.
When Rachel told Lorenzo, he was sitting beside Isabella’s hospital bed. He felt no triumph. He remembered Vincent teaching him to drive a delivery truck when they were young. Then he remembered Isabella in the church office and Claire’s sister asking for the truth.
“Does Megan know?” he asked.
“About the arrest, yes. We’ll keep her updated.”
Isabella turned toward him. “I want to talk to her when she’s ready.”
“Give her time,” Lorenzo said.
“I will.”
Megan agreed to meet weeks later. She brought one photograph of Claire: laughing at a picnic, eyes closed against the sun.
“She was stubborn,” Megan told Isabella. “Once she found those bills, she wasn’t going to pretend she hadn’t.”
“I wish I’d kept her safe,” Isabella said.
Megan looked at her for a long moment. “I wish a lot of things. But Vincent and the men with him made those choices.”
The meeting gave them no easy comfort. It gave Claire a name and a life beyond the crash report.
That evening, Rachel called with another update. Anthony had changed part of his statement. He now admitted he had seen Claire in Isabella’s car before it went over the guardrail.
“He says she was unconscious,” Rachel told Lorenzo. “We’re testing what else he told us.”

Lorenzo looked into Isabella’s hospital room. She was asleep, Bruno curled on the floor beneath her hand.
For Claire’s sake, he needed the rest of the truth.
