Chapter 15 - THE BENT RING

Workers removed Isabella’s grave marker on a clear spring morning. She and Lorenzo watched from beneath a nearby tree.

When the truck left, there was only a patch of turned earth.

“Ready?” Lorenzo asked.

“In a minute.”

Isabella stood there a while longer, then slipped her hand into his. They walked back to the car together.

Recovery had changed their days in ways neither had expected. Isabella slept better with Bruno in the bedroom. Lorenzo learned to knock before entering when she needed quiet. They argued, made up, and kept their therapy appointments. Isabella returned to work helping families of missing adults navigate searches and identification records.

Claire’s sister approved a fund in Claire’s name to help people who reported financial wrongdoing and needed legal support. Megan chose its purpose and stayed involved in how it was run. At the first meeting, she brought the photograph from the picnic.

Years later, Emma visited for Isabella’s birthday. She was nine and barely remembered the warehouse. She remembered Bruno racing toward her whenever she came through the garden gate.

Now she found his old brown collar on a shelf in Lorenzo’s study. Bruno had died peacefully the previous winter. Isabella still reached for him sometimes when she woke.

Emma lifted the collar. The bent ring hung beneath it.

“I really saw him that day,” she said.

“You did,” Lorenzo answered.

“And Mrs. DeLuca.”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at the photograph on his desk: Lorenzo and Isabella in the garden, Bruno sitting between them.

“Were you scared when I told you?”

“I was,” he said.

“Even though you didn’t believe me?”

Lorenzo thought about the sealed casket, the warehouse camera, Claire’s name, and the long wait outside the church office.

“I didn’t know what to believe yet,” he said. “I’m glad you came in and told me.”

Emma placed the collar back on the shelf. Isabella appeared at the door and asked if they wanted cake. Emma ran to her.

Lorenzo followed them into the garden. Sophia was laughing at something Emma said. Isabella turned and reached for his hand.

He took it.

Behind them, the study door stood open. On the shelf, Bruno’s bent ring caught the afternoon light.
