Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WHO KEPT WIPING

Rosa gave the envelope to Officer Bennett.

Her fingers wouldn’t release it at first.

“I should have helped her.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

Rosa nodded, accepting the blow.

“My son had trouble last year. A fight. Mrs. Mercer said she knew people who could make it worse.”

Bennett asked her to explain from the beginning.

Rosa sat down.

Vanessa remained in the hall, speaking rapidly into her phone.

“I saw her grab Lily’s arm last month,” Rosa said. “I told her she shouldn’t do that. The next day, this was in my bag.”

“Did she explain the photograph?”

“She said I had a nice boy. That it would be a shame if somebody decided he was dangerous.”

Daniel felt sick.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

Rosa looked at him.

“Every time I tried to speak without her, you asked if it could wait.”

He remembered that, too.

Later, Rosa.

I’m on a call.

Send me a text.

But the family tablet was linked to Vanessa’s account.

The household schedule went through Vanessa.

Time off went through Vanessa.

He had built a house where every road to him passed through his wife.

Bennett asked what happened by the pool.

This time Rosa told it all.

The cake.

The slap.

Lily looking toward her.

“I kept cleaning,” she whispered. “She was looking right at me, and I kept cleaning.”

Daniel turned away.

He didn’t trust himself to speak.

When he reached Kate’s house after midnight, Lily was asleep on the couch.

Her shoes sat by the door.

Pink frosting had dried along one sole.

He knelt and held the small shoe in his hand.

Kate stood behind him.

“She asked if Vanessa was mad about the dress.”

Daniel set the shoe down.

“What did you tell her?”

“That grown-ups can wash dresses.”

His eyes burned.

He sat beside Lily.

She woke when the cushion dipped.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

She touched his wrist.

“I didn’t ruin the birthday on purpose.”

He bent over her hand.

“You didn’t ruin anything.”

She blinked sleepily.

“Then why did she say I ruined Mommy’s life, too?”

Daniel went motionless.

Kate’s face drained.

May you like

Lily closed her eyes again.

And Daniel realized the slap was only the thing he had finally been allowed to see.
