Chapter 13 - THE ROOM WHERE SHE COULDN’T INTERRUPT

Daniel sent the message to Evelyn.
He blocked Vanessa’s number on every device Lily could reach.
Then he answered his daughter.
“You don’t need forgiveness for trying to get away from someone hurting you.”
Lily watched his face.
“Was kicking bad?”
“You were frightened. We can learn other ways to get help. What happened to you wasn’t your fault.”
She leaned back in her seat.
He waited until her breathing settled before starting the car.
The weeks that followed were full of things Daniel couldn’t fix with one phone call.
Lily woke at night.
She hid broken crayons.
Once, she spilled milk and crawled under the kitchen table before anyone spoke.
Daniel sat on the floor until she came out.
He missed meetings.
He canceled a trip.
His partner asked how long the new arrangement would last.
“As long as it needs to.”
Meanwhile, the investigation moved forward.
Rosa gave a full statement.
Mrs. Brooks provided the quiet-rules pages she had helped preserve.
The doctor’s documentation and the original recording became part of the case.
Vanessa’s lawyer stopped calling the video a misunderstanding.
At a hearing about temporary protections, Daniel sat several rows behind Evelyn.
Lily stayed with Kate.
Vanessa arrived in a navy suit, her hair pulled back, looking smaller than she had at the mansion.
For one dangerous second, Daniel remembered the woman who had brought him dinner after a long day.
The woman who had said she understood grief.
Then he remembered Lily asking whether people got new kids.
Vanessa turned toward him.
He looked at Evelyn instead.
When asked about contact, Vanessa described herself as a loving stepmother overwhelmed by a troubled child.
Daniel’s hands clenched.
The recording was presented.
Nobody interrupted Lily this time.
Her little voice filled the room.
“I did the strawberries.”
Vanessa looked down.
By the time they left, the temporary order keeping her away from Lily remained in place.
Outside, Daniel stopped on the courthouse steps.
Evelyn touched his arm.
“There will still be more to do.”
“I know.”
His phone rang.
Kate.
Lily wanted to speak.
“Daddy?”
“Hey, bug.”
“Did the lady believe the movie?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Can we get Mommy’s picture now?”
May you like
Daniel looked across the street at the traffic.
Then he said, “We’re bringing all her pictures home.”
