Chapter 11 - BEFORE THE SPLASH

The recording shook because Rosa had balanced the phone against a sugar bowl.
It caught half the table, the pool, and Lily approaching from the kitchen.
Her voice was bright.
“Happy birthday, Vanessa.”
Daniel watched beside Evelyn in her office.
He had asked to see it without Lily present.
On the screen, Vanessa glanced toward the phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Lily wanted a picture,” Rosa answered.
“Put it away.”
The image lurched downward.
The phone seemed to land faceup on the table, tilted toward the pool.
Vanessa must have thought the recording had stopped.
Daniel heard the plate scrape.
Then Lily.
“I did the strawberries.”
A sharp voice.
A crash.
Silence.
Then the slap.
Daniel stood so abruptly his chair struck the wall.
Evelyn paused the video.
“We can stop.”
“No.”
He remained standing.
They watched the rest.
Lily looking toward Rosa.
Vanessa stepping forward.
The kick.
The fall.
And after it, Lily’s voice, small and frantic:
“Rosa, please. I didn’t mean to.”
Daniel turned away from the screen.
He had spent months believing his daughter was adjusting.
She had been surviving.
Evelyn let him stand at the window until he could speak.
“Send it to the investigator.”
“We will preserve the original device and provide the recording properly.”
“Can Vanessa still say—”
“She can say whatever she chooses. This gives the investigator a much fuller account.”
His phone buzzed.
A text from Kate.
Lily’s counselor has an opening tomorrow. Also, she asked if you can help make toast tonight.
Daniel looked at the message for a long time.
Toast.
A task small enough to trust him with.
“I need to go home,” he said.
At Kate’s, Lily stood on a stool beside the toaster.
“You do the hot part,” she instructed.
“Yes, ma’am.”
She handed him a plate.
Then she glanced at his face.
“Did you see the movie?”
He went still.
“What movie?”
“The one Rosa made.”
“Yes.”
Lily stared at the crumbs.
“All of it?”
“All of it.”
Her mouth tightened.
“You believe me now?”
Daniel knelt beside the stool.
May you like
“I should have listened before there was a movie.”
And finally, with the toast burning behind them, Lily began to cry.
