Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WITH FROSTING ON HER SHOES

“Your daughter tried to drown me!”

That was what Daniel Mercer heard when he stepped onto the patio.

His wife was in the pool, clawing at the edge in a soaked white dress.

His six-year-old daughter stood a few feet away, shaking.

And between them lay a birthday cake, smashed across the stone.

For one awful second, nobody moved.

Then Lily lowered the hand covering her cheek.

Daniel saw the red mark.

“What happened?”

Vanessa hauled herself up the pool steps.

“She kicked me! Daniel, she deliberately—”

“I asked what happened.”

Ten seconds earlier, Lily had been smiling.

She had crossed the patio in her beige dress with its little white collar, carrying a cake she had spent the afternoon decorating. The frosting was crooked. One strawberry kept sliding toward the edge.

She had held the plate with both hands.

“Happy birthday, Vanessa.”

Her stepmother had looked at the cake as though Lily had handed her something dirty.

“Did you make this?”

“Mrs. Brooks helped with the oven. But I did the—”

Vanessa snatched the plate.

“I told you I didn’t want a fuss.”

The cake hit the patio.

Lily stared at it.

“I just wanted you to—”

The slap snapped her face sideways.

Near the table, Rosa, the nanny, stopped wiping for half a second.

Lily looked at her.

Rosa lowered her eyes.

When Vanessa reached toward Lily again, the little girl kicked out in panic. Her shoe caught Vanessa’s shin. Vanessa stumbled, her heel slid, and the pool swallowed her scream.

Now Daniel stood between his wife and his daughter.

“Lily?”

The child tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa grabbed a towel from a chair.

“She’s been difficult all week. Ask Rosa.”

Daniel turned.

Rosa’s cloth moved across the same clean patch of glass.

“Rosa. Did you see this?”

The nanny looked at Vanessa.

Then she looked at Lily.

“I saw her kick Mrs. Mercer.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Lily took one small step backward.

“Daddy—”

“Go inside, sweetheart.”

Her mouth trembled.

“Please listen.”

“Inside. I’ll be there in a minute.”

He meant to get her away from the shouting.

But Lily heard something else.

She heard that Rosa had told him.

She heard that Vanessa had won.

And as she turned toward the house, she whispered the words that stopped him cold.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me either.”
