Chapter 12 - THE ENEMY I NEVER SAW

I met Florence in a quiet café outside town.

Not because I trusted her.

Because I needed answers.

She arrived alone.

No makeup.

No designer clothes.

For the first time, she looked like a normal person.

Not a woman controlling a room.

Not a woman planning a wedding.

Just someone scared.

“You look different.”

She looked at me.

“So do you.”

I sat down.

“You have ten minutes.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“I didn’t plan everything.”

I almost laughed.

“You forged documents.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You used my daughter.”

Her eyes dropped.

“Yes.”

My anger returned.

“Then explain what I’m supposed to believe.”

Florence looked at me.

“Richard found me.”

The name changed the atmosphere.

“He knew I needed money.”

“And?”

“He offered me a deal.”

“What deal?”

She swallowed.

“Marry you.”

I stared.

“And steal from me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked me more than another lie would have.

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Richard is removing everyone who knows the truth.”

I studied her.

“Everyone?”

She nodded.

“Martin.”

“Hannah.”

“Me.”

I leaned forward.

“And you expect me to feel sorry for you?”

“No.”

Her answer was immediate.

“I don’t deserve that.”

For the first time, I believed she meant it.

---

Florence gave me a file.

Inside were photographs.

Richard meeting with lawyers.

Richard meeting with fake investors.

Richard meeting with someone else.

Someone I recognized.

My blood went cold.

“Who is that?”

Florence looked at me.

“Your attorney.”

I stared.

“No.”

“He has been helping Richard for years.”

I flipped through the pages.

Every person around me.

Every person I trusted.

Connected.

A perfect circle.

A trap.

---

That night, I returned home.

Hannah and Leo were waiting.

Leo ran toward me.

“Grandpa!”

I picked him up.

Held him tightly.

Because after everything

he was the one person who had never lied to me.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“Are we safe now?”

I looked at my grandson.

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to give him comfort.

But I had spent too many years believing things that weren’t true.

So I told him the truth.

“We’re going to make sure we are.”

That night, we opened Elizabeth’s safety deposit box.

Inside was one envelope.

One flash drive.

And one final letter.

The letter began:

Jonathan,

If you are reading this, then I was right.

The person who destroyed our family is someone you love.

I looked at Hannah.

She looked at me.

Then we opened the flash drive.

A video appeared.

Elizabeth was sitting in our old living room.

Her face was serious.

Her voice was quiet.

“If anything happens to me
”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Do not trust Martin.”

My heart stopped.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Because Martin is not the person behind this.”

A pause.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“The person behind this is someone much closer.”

The video ended.

May you like

And on the screen appeared one name.

JONATHAN PRESCOTT.
