Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

For fifteen years, I carried the pain of losing Elizabeth.

I remembered the phone call.

The hospital.

The doctor’s face.

The empty side of my bed.

I built an entire life around that loss.

And now Martin was telling me the foundation was a lie.

“Say it again.”

My voice barely worked.

Martin looked broken.

“Elizabeth’s death wasn’t random.”

Hannah started crying.

“Dad
”

I looked at Martin.

“Were you there?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Were you there?”

“Yes.”

The word destroyed something inside me.

“You were there when my wife died?”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Martin looked down.

“Because I was trying to fix what I had done.”

“What did you do?”

He swallowed.

“I helped Richard move money.”

Hannah stepped back.

“You helped him steal?”

Martin shook his head.

“At first, I didn’t know.”

“That’s what everyone says.”

“I thought it was a temporary loan.”

I stared at him.

“You stole from me.”

“I was desperate.”

The anger inside me became almost impossible to control.

“People get desperate every day.”

My voice rose.

“They don’t betray their families.”

Martin had tears in his eyes.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

I pointed toward the door.

“You don’t get to say you know.”

---

Martin finally told us everything.

Fifteen years ago, Prescott Homes was growing fast.

Too fast.

Richard became obsessed with controlling everything.

He created hidden accounts.

Moved money.

Manipulated contracts.

Martin discovered it.

But instead of telling me

he tried to fix it himself.

That was his mistake.

Because Richard noticed.

And when Elizabeth discovered the truth

everything changed.

“She was going to expose both of us.”

Martin whispered.

“Richard panicked.”

I stared.

“And you?”

His eyes filled.

“I should have protected her.”

The silence was unbearable.

“What happened that night?”

Martin closed his eyes.

“She was driving to meet you.”

My heart stopped.

“She had the evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“A recording.”

Hannah looked at me.

“A recording?”

Martin nodded.

“Elizabeth recorded Richard admitting everything.”

I stood.

“Where is it?”

Martin looked at me.

“I don’t know.”

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“But someone does.”

---

That night, we searched Elizabeth’s old belongings.

The things I had never touched after she died.

Her jewelry box.

Her notebooks.

Her old laptop.

The memories I was too afraid to open.

Hannah found something.

“Dad.”

I turned.

She was holding an old photo frame.

Behind the picture was a small hidden compartment.

Inside was a key.

Attached to it was a note.

For Jonathan.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

If you found this, it means the truth finally reached you.

The key belongs to a safety deposit box.

Everything you need is inside.

I looked at Hannah.

“When was this?”

She checked the date.

“The day before Mom died.”

My heart sank.

Someone had known.

Someone had been searching for this.

Then my phone rang.

Florence.

I stared at the screen.

After everything

she still called me.

I answered.

Her voice was different.

No confidence.

No control.

Only fear.

“Jonathan.”

“What do you want?”

A long pause.

“Richard is going to kill you.”

I froze.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because I know what he’s planning.”

I said nothing.

Then Florence whispered:

“He never wanted your money.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did he want?”

May you like

Her answer changed everything.

“He wanted you to suffer like he did.”
