Chapter 2 - THE FILE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I waited until Florence walked away.

Then I played the video again.

This time, I wasn’t listening as a father.

I was listening as a businessman.

And what I heard terrified me.

“Dad, I found documents hidden in your office.”

Hannah’s voice was shaking.

“Documents that have your signature.”

I leaned closer.

“My signature?”

She nodded.

“But you didn’t sign them.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

I looked at my own hands.

Hands that had built houses.

Signed contracts.

Trusted people.

Hands that had never imagined they could be used against me.

“Hannah, what did you find?”

The video continued.

“Transfers.”

“Ownership changes.”

“Power of attorney forms.”

My stomach dropped.

Florence had been asking about my estate for months.

At the time, I thought it was normal.

A woman planning a future.

A woman wanting security.

Now every conversation sounded different.

The video ended with Hannah saying:

“Dad, if something happens to me, don’t believe anyone who says I disappeared because I was upset.”

The screen went black.

I sat there.

Completely still.

Then my phone rang.

Florence.

I stared at her name.

Before today, I would have answered immediately.

Now

I let it ring.

Seconds later, another call came.

Martin.

I answered.

“Jonathan.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Florence is worried.”

I looked at the locked door.

“Why would Florence be worried?”

Another pause.

“Don’t do this today, Jonathan.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Do what?”

“Let old family drama destroy your future.”

Old family drama.

That phrase.

It sounded exactly like something Florence would say.

I ended the call.

Then I opened the second folder.

Inside was a scanned document.

The title:

ESTATE TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

My name was on it.

Jonathan Prescott.

My signature was at the bottom.

Except

I had never signed it.

I zoomed in.

My hands became cold.

Because the signature looked exactly like mine.

Someone hadn’t copied my name.

Someone had practiced my handwriting.

A knock came again.

This time louder.

“Jonathan!”

Florence.

Anger replaced sweetness.

“Open this door right now.”

I closed the laptop.

Then I looked at the document one more time.

Someone had been preparing this for a long time.

May you like

And whoever it was

knew me better than I thought.
