Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

I opened the door.
Florence stood there.
Her perfect wedding makeup was still flawless.
But her eyes were different.
âYouâre worrying people.â
I stared at her.
âAm I?â
âYes.â
She stepped inside.
âJonathan, Hannah has always been emotional.â
I said nothing.
âShe lost her husband.â
Nothing.
âSheâs struggling.â
Still nothing.
Florenceâs expression changed.
âYouâre letting her manipulate you.â
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Because it was exactly what Hannah warned me about.
I looked at Florence.
âWhy did you know there was a USB drive?â
Silence.
Only two seconds.
But enough.
Her face changed.
âI guessed.â
âNo.â
My voice was quiet.
âYou didnât guess.â
She looked away.
âJonathanâŠâ
âHow did you know?â
Her jaw tightened.
Then she smiled.
A cold smile.
âYouâre really going to question me five minutes before our wedding?â
And there it was.
The guilt.
The pressure.
The attempt to make me feel wrong for asking.
I stepped back.
âWhere is Hannah?â
Florence froze.
âWhat?â
âWhere is my daughter?â
âI donât know.â
âYou spoke to her today.â
âNo.â
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo.
Hannahâs car.
Parked outside an abandoned warehouse.
Below the picture were six words.
YOUR DAUGHTER FOUND THE TRUTH.
My heart stopped.
I looked up at Florence.
And for the first timeâŠ
I saw fear in her eyes.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Fear.
May you like
Because she knew exactly where Hannah was.
And she knew I had just found out.
