Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO TOOK HER PLACE

Evelyn pulled the knife away from Caleb’s throat.
“My sister has been dead for twelve years.”
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
“Isabelle disappeared twelve years ago.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Evelyn stared at him.
Her younger sister, Isabelle Vale, had vanished after a violent argument with their father.
Police found her car near a river.
They found her coat on the bank.
They never found her body.
Evelyn had spent years searching.
Eventually, she accepted what everyone told her.
Isabelle was dead.
Caleb continued.
“She returned three years ago.”
“She contacted Adrian first.”
“Why?”
“She wanted access to the Vale trust.”
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“The trust belongs equally to both daughters.”
“Only if both daughters are alive.”
A pounding sound came from the freezer door.
The masked men had reached them.
Lena looked around urgently.
“How do we get out?”
Caleb pointed behind the frozen seafood shelves.
“There is a maintenance hatch.”
They pushed the shelf aside.
Caleb opened a narrow metal panel.
Lena climbed through first.
Evelyn followed.
Caleb entered last and pulled the shelf back into place.
They crawled through a dark utility tunnel beneath the ballroom.
Above them, the guests could be heard shouting.
Evelyn moved toward a small monitoring station.
The hotel’s internal cameras covered every major room.
On one screen, Victoria stood beside Adrian.
She was accusing him of lying.
On another, the police commissioner secretly unlocked a side exit.
Two men in expensive suits slipped through.
Caleb pointed at them.
“Bank auditors.”
“They helped move the money.”
“How much?”
“Nearly two billion dollars.”
Lena turned toward him.
“Through this hotel?”
“Through the charity.”
Evelyn’s foundation had raised money for hospital workers, disabled veterans and low-income families.
Caleb’s voice grew quieter.
“Fake organizations were created.”
“Donations entered the foundation.”
“Then the money was routed through construction contracts and foreign accounts.”
Evelyn felt something colder than anger.
“You signed the reports.”
Caleb looked ashamed.
“At first, I believed they were legitimate.”
“Then Isabelle showed me what would happen if I refused.”
He pulled up his sleeve.
Old burn scars covered his arm.
Lena looked away.
Evelyn did not.
“You still helped them.”
“Yes.”
“And I will testify.”
A camera in the underground parking garage suddenly moved.
A black limousine entered through a private gate.
The rear door opened.
A tall woman stepped out.
She wore a white evening gown.
Her dark hair was pinned neatly above her neck.
A diamond necklace covered a scar along her collarbone.
Evelyn froze.
The woman looked directly into the security camera.
Then she smiled.

Isabelle Vale had returned.
And she was wearing Evelyn’s face.
