Chapter 11 - THE ACCOUNT WITH NO OWNER

The ballroom remained closed for three days.

Federal investigators examined every damaged wall.

Employees gave statements.

Guests hired attorneys.

News vans surrounded the hotel.

Headlines appeared across the country.

DEAD BILLIONAIRE RETURNS AT OWN GALA.

SENATOR ARRESTED IN TWO-BILLION-DOLLAR CHARITY SCHEME.

SOCIALITE’S HIDDEN RECORDINGS EXPOSE ELITE NETWORK.

But Evelyn did not speak to reporters.

She stayed inside the hotel.

Caleb survived surgery.

Lena’s baby was unharmed.

The injured employees received full medical care.

Every worker who had been insulted or threatened that evening was offered paid leave.

Evelyn sat in her private office studying the records from the vault.

One account appeared repeatedly.

Its number ended in 1908.

No owner was listed.

No address existed.

Yet nearly six hundred million dollars had moved through it.

Caleb joined her by video call from the hospital.

“That is the account Isabelle mentioned.”

“Who controls it?”

“I do not know.”

“You approved transfers into it.”

“I approved transfers into an account labeled Vale Recovery Holdings.”

“That company does not exist.”

“It existed in the system.”

Evelyn examined the signatures.

Her own name appeared on several documents.

The handwriting was nearly perfect.

“They forged my authorization.”

Caleb shook his head.

“Not all of it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“One transfer occurred six years ago.”

“Before Isabelle returned.”

“Before Adrian joined the foundation.”

Evelyn searched the date.

The transfer had happened one week after her father died.

Six hundred million dollars had been moved from the family trust.

The authorization contained Evelyn’s signature.

But she had never seen the document.

Lena entered the office carrying a box of recovered personal items.

“We found these in the old boardroom.”

Inside were photographs, files and a broken voice recorder.

Evelyn connected the recorder to her computer.

Most of the audio was damaged.

One file remained.

Her father’s voice filled the office.

“The first transfer is complete.”

A second man responded.

Evelyn recognized the voice immediately.

Her family attorney.

Thomas Greer.

Thomas had managed the Vale trust for thirty years.

He had helped Evelyn search for Isabelle.

He had comforted her after the plane crash.

He had also signed Evelyn’s death declaration.

The recording continued.

Thomas said something that made Evelyn’s blood run cold.

“Once both girls are removed, the account becomes ours.”

Evelyn paused the audio.

Lena looked at her.

“Both girls?”

Evelyn stood.

“Adrian and Isabelle were never in control.”

“They were being used.”

Caleb’s face appeared pale on the screen.

“Thomas attended the gala.”

Evelyn checked the guest list.

His name was there.

But he did not appear in any ballroom footage after the shooting.

Lena walked toward the window.

A black car was parked across the street.

A man sat in the driver’s seat.

He was watching the hotel.

The phone on Evelyn’s desk rang.

She answered.

Thomas Greer’s voice came through the line.

“You finally found the account.”

Evelyn looked toward the black car.

“Where are you?”

May you like

“Closer than you think.”

A red laser dot appeared on Lena’s chest.
