Chapter 1 - THE RING EVERYONE FEARED

Because everyone there recognized that ring.

It was not simply expensive.

It was not something a wealthy woman could purchase from a private jeweler in Paris.

The enormous pink diamond belonged to the Vale family.

More specifically, it belonged to Evelyn Vale.

The woman who owned the hotel.

The woman who controlled the charitable foundation hosting that night’s gala.

And the woman everyone believed had died eighteen months earlier.

The socialite lying on the marble floor stared at the ring in horror.

Her name was Victoria Langford.

For years, Victoria had built her reputation by humiliating anyone she considered beneath her.

Waiters.

Drivers.

Housekeepers.

Assistants.

Anyone who needed a paycheck.

But now, for the first time in her life, she looked truly powerless.

The waitress slowly lowered her gloved hand.

“Do you recognize it, Victoria?”

Victoria’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

A nervous whisper spread through the ballroom.

“That is Evelyn Vale’s ring.”

“It cannot be.”

“She died in Switzerland.”

“I attended her memorial.”

The waitress looked around at the terrified guests.

Then she reached beneath the collar of her uniform.

She removed a small skin-colored strip from her jaw.

A thin piece of prosthetic makeup came away.

Then another.

The shape of her face began to change.

A scar appeared along her right cheek.

A scar every board member in the room had seen before.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered near the orchestra.

The waitress removed the dark wig from her head.

Silver-blonde hair fell across her shoulders.

An elderly banker near the stage stumbled backward.

“My God.”

Evelyn Vale stood in the center of her own ballroom.

Alive.

Victoria’s face drained of color.

“You are dead.”

Evelyn looked down at her.

“No.”

“I was inconvenient.”

Victoria tried to sit up.

“You cannot do this.”

Evelyn’s voice remained calm.

“You threw garbage at a woman because you believed no one would stop you.”

Victoria glanced toward the security guards.

“Remove her.”

Not one guard moved.

Victoria shouted louder.

“I said remove her!”

The head of security stepped forward.

But he did not approach Evelyn.

He turned toward Victoria instead.

“Mrs. Langford, please remain where you are.”

Victoria stared at him in disbelief.

“You work for my husband.”

The guard’s expression hardened.

“No.”

“We work for the owner of the Vale Grand Hotel.”

Evelyn picked up the wet napkin from the floor.

Then she placed it gently on Victoria’s chest.

“You wanted me to take out your trash.”

She leaned closer.

“So tonight, I will.”

May you like

At that exact moment, every ballroom door locked.

And the enormous screens above the stage suddenly came to life.
