Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO CAME HOME

Dominic Russo survived.
The bullet entered below his shoulder, missed his heart, and damaged enough tissue to keep him in the hospital for twelve days.
Luca refused to leave.
Neither did Chloe.
On the third night, Dominic woke to find Chloe asleep in a chair with Luca curled against her.
For several minutes, he simply watched them.
The two people who had walked into his life and somehow made his enormous mansion feel less empty.
Luca opened his eyes.
“Daddy?”
Dominic smiled.
“Hey.”
Luca jumped carefully onto the bed.
“You came back.”
“I promised.”
Luca hugged him.
Dominic winced.
“Ow.”
“Sorry.”
“Worth it.”
Chloe woke.
Their eyes met.
“You look terrible,” she said.
Dominic smiled.
“So do you.”
“I’ve been sleeping in a hospital chair.”
“I got shot.”
“You always need to win.”
“I’m competitive.”
Months passed.
Victor Russo received multiple federal charges, including conspiracy, murder, racketeering, bribery, and attempted murder.
Marco faced his own trial.
The Russo financial empire was dismantled piece by piece.
Dominic sold every illegal operation he could legally dispose of, closed the rest, and turned the legitimate companies over to independent management.
People called him weak.
He didn’t care.
For the first time in his adult life, Dominic Russo no longer wanted people to fear him.
He wanted his son to run toward him when he entered a room.
One Sunday morning, Chloe found Dominic in the mansion garden.
Luca was kneeling beside him.
Between them sat the repaired music box.
The tiny silver ballerina slowly turned.
Sofia’s melody played.
Luca smiled.
“You fixed it.”
Dominic nodded.
“It took three jewelers.”
Chloe laughed.
“Of course it did.”
Luca looked at his father.
“Are you still sad when you hear Mommy’s song?”
Dominic thought about it.
“Yes.”
“Then why listen?”
Dominic looked toward Chloe.
“Because being sad about someone isn’t the same as being angry that they’re gone.”
Luca considered that.
Then nodded like the answer made perfect sense.
He ran inside to get breakfast.
Dominic remained by the fountain.
Chloe stood beside him.
“You’ve changed.”
“Apparently getting slapped helps.”
She smiled.
“You deserved it.”
“I did.”
Silence settled between them.
Comfortable this time.
Dominic looked at her.
“I owe you more than I can ever repay.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“I know.”
“That mansion?”
“No.”
“The Chicago Cubs?”
“I don’t own them.”
“You sure?”
He laughed.
A real laugh.
Chloe stared.
Luca had been right.
Dominic Russo used to smile.
He just needed to remember how.
His expression became serious.
“You saved my son.”
“You saved him too.”
“Eventually.”
“You learned.”
“Because you forced me to look at him.”
Chloe’s smile faded.
“That night…”
“I know.”
“I thought you were going to kill me.”
“So did Carlo.”
She laughed.
Dominic stepped closer.
“And now?”
“Now I think you’re slightly less terrifying.”
“High praise.”
“Don’t get comfortable.”
He looked at her for a long moment.
“Stay.”
Chloe blinked.
“As Luca’s nanny?”
“No.”
Her heartbeat changed.
Dominic continued.
“Stay because this house is different when you’re here.”
“Dominic…”
“I’m not asking you to replace Sofia.”
“I would never want that.”
“I know.”
He stepped closer.
“You’re Chloe.”
Simple words.
But they mattered.
“And you walked into the worst part of my life and told me the truth when everybody else was afraid to.”
Chloe looked toward the mansion.
Luca appeared at the window.
He was pretending not to watch.
Badly.
She smiled.
“Your son is spying on us.”
Dominic glanced back.
Luca disappeared instantly.
“He’s terrible at surveillance.”
“Definitely not going into the family business.”
“There is no family business anymore.”
“Good.”
Dominic took Chloe’s hand.
Slowly.
Giving her time to pull away.
She didn’t.
One year later, the old Russo mansion no longer had armed men in every hallway.
The east wing became a children’s foundation office.
The ballroom that once hosted criminals and corrupt politicians hosted charity dinners instead.
Rachel came home.
Chloe never fully forgave the years she had lost with her mother.
But they began again.
Carlo testified against Victor and Marco.
Dominic never completely forgot the betrayal.
But he honored Sofia’s final request.
Judge a man by what he does next.
Carlo became head of security for the foundation.
Elias visited every Sunday.
He and Dominic still argued about everything.
Luca loved it.
And on a warm September afternoon, Dominic stood beneath a white arch in the mansion garden.
No guns.
No guards.
No enemies.
Just family.
Luca stood beside him in a tiny black suit.
He leaned toward his father.
“Are you nervous?”
Dominic whispered.
“Terrified.”
Luca grinned.
“Good.”
Music began.
Chloe walked toward them.
Dominic looked at the woman who had once stood between him and his son because she believed a frightened six-year-old mattered more than her own safety.
He remembered the slap.
The broken music box.
The fear in Luca’s eyes.
The moment his entire life cracked open.
Chloe reached him.
Dominic took her hands.
“You know,” he whispered, “most people say hello before hitting me.”
She smiled.
“You needed the faster version.”
Luca covered his mouth to hide his laugh.
Dominic looked down at him.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
The ceremony began.
And for the first time in years, Dominic Russo didn’t think about enemies.
He didn’t think about territory.
He didn’t think about revenge.
He looked at his son.
Luca was smiling at him.
Not hiding.
Not shaking.
Not afraid.
Then Dominic looked at Chloe.
And he finally understood something Sofia had tried to teach him years ago.
Power wasn’t making people fear what you could do to them.
Power was becoming someone the people you loved felt safe standing beside.
Years earlier, Chicago had known Dominic Russo as a man nobody dared cross.
But Luca remembered something different.
He remembered the night a brave young nanny slapped his father across the face.
He remembered the moment his father finally looked at him and saw his fear.
And he remembered everything that happened afterward.
Because Chloe Hastings didn’t destroy Dominic Russo that night.
She saved him.
And in the end, the most feared man in Chicago discovered that the hardest empire he would ever have to rebuild…
May you like
was his own family.
