She Hid Her Pain for Years / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE BELIEVED HER

Harper didn’t sleep that night.

She sat beside Noah’s bed, watching him breathe.

The little boy had finally fallen asleep without nightmares.

That alone felt like a miracle.

For years, Harper had convinced herself that if she could just survive one more day, everything would eventually get better.

But she was learning something painful.

Running away wasn’t the same as being free.

Derek was still inside her head.

Every sound.

Every phone vibration.

Every knock on the door.

They all felt like him.

At sunrise, Gabriel found her sitting outside.

“You didn’t sleep.”

Harper looked surprised.

“How do you know?”

“You look like someone who spent the night fighting a war nobody else could see.”

She looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For bringing trouble here.”

Gabriel sat across from her.

“Harper.”

She looked up.

“You keep apologizing for things other people did to you.”

The words hit harder than she expected.

Her eyes filled.

“I should have left sooner.”

“Maybe.”

She looked shocked by his answer.

Gabriel continued.

“But staying doesn’t make what happened your fault.”

For a moment, Harper said nothing.

Nobody had ever said that to her.

Not like that.

Not without conditions.

Not expecting anything in return.

“I tried to tell people,” she whispered.

Gabriel listened.

“My first year of marriage, I told someone.”

“Who?”

“My friend.”

“And?”

Harper laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“She said Derek was a good man.”

Gabriel looked down.

“She said I was lucky.”

The silence that followed felt heavy.

“Then I stopped talking.”

Later that day, Gabriel’s attorney arrived.

His expression was serious.

“I found something.”

Gabriel looked at Harper.

“What is it?”

The attorney opened a folder.

“Derek Collins has multiple complaints.”

Harper froze.

“Complaints?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Because none of them became official reports.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Why?”

The attorney hesitated.

“Because the people who complained withdrew their statements.”

Harper understood immediately.

Fear.

The attorney continued.

“One woman said Derek threatened her. Another said he used his position to intimidate her.”

Gabriel looked at Harper.

“Did you know?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became smaller.

“I thought I was the only one.”

That sentence broke something inside Gabriel.

Because he realized Harper’s biggest fear wasn’t Derek.

It was believing nobody would believe her.

That evening, Gabriel received a visitor.

A man wearing a police uniform.

Derek Collins.

Harper saw him through the window.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

“No.”

Gabriel turned.

“What?”

“He’s here.”

Derek stood at the front door.

Smiling.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he owned the world.

Gabriel walked toward the entrance.

Harper grabbed his arm.

“Don’t open it.”

“Why?”

Her voice trembled.

“Because that’s what he wants.”

The doorbell rang again.

Derek’s voice came through the door.

“Harper.”

She stopped breathing.

“I know you’re inside.”

A smile slowly disappeared from Gabriel’s face.

Because he finally understood.

Derek didn’t come to take Harper home.

May you like

He came to remind her…

That he could still reach her anywhere.
