She Hid Her Pain for Years / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT SHE STOPPED HIDING

The first thing Gabriel Ashford noticed was not the blood.

It was the silence.

A mansion that large was never completely quiet. There was always the hum of the air conditioning, the ticking of expensive clocks, the distant sound of rain hitting the tall glass windows.

But that night…

Nothing.

Gabriel stood in the hallway outside the private guest bathroom, his hand still on the doorknob.

He had only come downstairs because he heard something fall.

A sharp sound.

Like someone trying not to cry.

“Harper?”

No answer.

He frowned.

The housekeeper had been working late again.

She always did.

Too late.

Too quietly.

Gabriel slowly opened the door.

And what he saw made him freeze.

Harper Lane stood beside the bathroom counter, one hand pressed against her leg. A small cut had opened while she was cleaning the marble floor.

But the injury on her leg was not what caught his attention.

It was her back.

For the first time, Gabriel saw what Harper had spent years hiding.

The long sleeves.

The careful movements.

The way she always flinched when someone raised their voice.

They weren’t random habits.

They were survival.

Old marks covered parts of her skin.

Some faded.

Some recent.

Some that looked like they had never fully healed.

Harper immediately pulled her uniform back into place.

Her face turned pale.

“Mr. Ashford…”

Her voice shook.

“I can explain.”

Gabriel didn’t move.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t disgusted.

He looked completely stunned.

“Who did this?”

Harper looked away.

“I’m sorry. I should have been more careful.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Silence.

Rain hit the windows harder.

Gabriel lowered his voice.

“Harper… who hurt you?”

Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her uniform.

“No one.”

The answer came too quickly.

Too practiced.

Gabriel had spent years negotiating with people who lied.

That wasn’t a lie.

That was fear.

“You don’t have to protect him anymore.”

The moment he said those words, Harper’s eyes filled with tears.

Because that was exactly what she had been doing.

Protecting him.

Protecting herself.

Protecting Noah.

Her eight-year-old brother who was sleeping upstairs in the small apartment she rented because she couldn’t afford anything better.

She swallowed hard.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

Harper shook her head.

“You need to fire me.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“What?”

“I broke your rules. I was injured in your house. You don’t need problems like me.”

“Problems like you?”

Her eyes dropped.

“That’s what people always say.”

For a moment, Gabriel said nothing.

Then he asked quietly:

“Does the man who did this know where you are?”

Harper stopped breathing.

Her expression changed.

And Gabriel knew he had his answer.

The fear on her face was stronger than any bruise.

“He’s looking for me,” she whispered.

“Who?”

Harper looked toward the window.

Toward the darkness outside.

“Derek.”

A name.

Only one name.

But it carried years of pain.

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Who is Derek?”

Harper’s voice broke.

“My husband.”

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“He’s a police officer.”
