She Hid Her Pain for Years / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - THE SECRET HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Harper couldn’t sleep.

Her father’s name kept appearing everywhere.

A man she thought she understood.

A man who had died years ago.

A man who never told her the truth.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She whispered into the empty room.

Gabriel found her sitting on the floor with the old document.

“You okay?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She looked up.

“My father knew.”

Gabriel sat beside her.

“Knew what?”

“That Derek was dangerous.”

The pain in her voice was obvious.

“And he never warned me.”

Gabriel didn’t interrupt.

Because sometimes people didn’t need answers.

They needed someone to stay.

The next morning, Harper went through her father’s old belongings.

Most of it had been thrown away.

But one small box remained.

Inside:

Old photographs.

A notebook.

And a flash drive.

Her hands trembled.

“Why would he hide this?”

Gabriel looked at the flash drive.

“Maybe he didn’t trust anyone else.”

They opened it.

A single video file appeared.

Harper pressed play.

Her father appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Serious.

“Harper, if you’re watching this…”

She covered her mouth.

“Dad…”

The recording continued.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you everything.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Derek Collins is not the man people think he is.”

Harper’s eyes filled with tears.

“He has protection. People who cover for him.”

A pause.

“But I found proof.”

Gabriel leaned closer.

The video ended with one final sentence.

“The evidence is hidden where Derek will never think to look.”

The screen went black.

For hours, they searched.

The notebook.

The photos.

The old files.

Then Harper noticed something.

A small mark inside the notebook.

A location.

Her childhood home.

“My father hid something there.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Then we go there.”

But someone was watching.

Outside Gabriel’s mansion.

Derek sat in his car.

His phone showed a live location.

He smiled.

“Finally.”

The person beside him asked:

“Are you sure?”

Derek looked toward the house.

“She’s going back to where this started.”

He started the car.

“And that’s where it ends.”

Harper, Gabriel, and Rachel arrived at her childhood home after midnight.

The house had been empty for years.

Dust covered everything.

Memories filled every room.

Harper walked upstairs.

Her old bedroom.

The place where she once believed the world was safe.

She searched the closet.

Nothing.

The floor.

Nothing.

Then she remembered something.

A loose wooden board.

Her father’s hiding place.

She pulled it open.

Inside was a small metal box.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Documents.

Photos.

A recording device.

And one letter.

On the envelope were four words:

FOR HARPER. OPEN ALONE.

Before she could open it…

The front door downstairs slammed shut.

Someone had entered.

Gabriel looked toward the hallway.

“We’re not alone.”

A voice echoed through the house.

“Harper.”

Her blood froze.

May you like

Derek.

He had followed them.
