Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO FINALLY SPOKE

The courtroom was packed.
Women Harper had never met sat quietly in the back.
Women who carried the same fear.
The same silence.
The same pain.
For years, Derek Collins had convinced them they were alone.
Today, they realized they weren’t.
Harper sat before the judge.
Her hands trembled.
Gabriel noticed.
“You don’t have to do this.”
She looked at him.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I do.”
The prosecutor approached.
“Ms. Lane, can you tell the court what happened?”
Harper looked down.
For a moment, she was back there.
The locked doors.
The excuses.
The apologies she was forced to make.
Then she looked up.
“My husband spent years making me believe nobody would believe me.”
The room was silent.
“He told me he was the only person who would ever stay.”
Her voice shook.
“But he was the reason I needed someone to save me.”
Across the room, Derek watched.
No anger.
No panic.
Just a cold stare.
Because Derek still believed he could win.
Until Captain Michael Voss entered the courtroom.
Everyone turned.
Harper froze.
“What is he doing here?”
Gabriel watched carefully.
Voss walked toward the prosecutor.
Then placed a folder on the table.
“I have information.”
The room became silent.
Derek’s expression changed.
For the first time…
Fear.
Real fear.
The prosecutor opened the folder.
Inside were internal department records.
Emails.
Private communications.
Evidence showing Voss had covered complaints.
But then Voss said something nobody expected.
“I was wrong.”
Harper stared.
The man who ignored her was finally admitting it.
“I thought protecting the department was more important than protecting victims.”
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.”
After the hearing, Harper walked outside.
She expected to feel victorious.
But she didn’t.
She felt tired.
Gabriel walked beside her.
“You okay?”
She nodded.
“I think so.”
A small smile appeared.
“I spent years waiting for someone to rescue me.”
“And now?”
She looked back at the courthouse.
“Now I know I was strong enough to save myself.”
That evening, Harper returned to the mansion.
Noah ran toward her.
“Harper!”
She hugged him tightly.
For the first time in years…
She wasn’t holding him because she was afraid.
She was holding him because she was happy.
Then her phone rang.
A message.
Unknown number.
She opened it.
A photograph appeared.
Her heart stopped.
It was Derek.
But the message underneath wasn’t from him.
YOU MISSED SOMEONE.
Harper looked at Gabriel.
“What?”
She zoomed in on the photo.
Behind Derek stood another person.
Someone familiar.
Someone who had been beside her from the beginning.
May you like
Her former best friend.
The woman who helped Derek find her.
