Chapter 8 - VAULT 317

The vault contained no money.
No jewelry.
No stock certificates.
Only a black leather ledger.
A stack of photographs.
And a sealed letter.
Victor opened the ledger first.
Payments stretched back twenty years.
Judges.
Accountants.
Executives.
Private investigators.
Danielâs name appeared repeatedly.
So did Margaretâs.
But the earliest entries belonged to someone else.
EDWARD HALE.
Victorâs father.
His father had built Hale Holdings into an empire.
And apparently, he had built part of it through fraud.
Rebecca examined the entries.
âDaniel didnât start this.â
Victor stared at his fatherâs signature.
âHe inherited it.â
Margaret stood across the vault.
âYes.â
Victor looked at her.
âYou knew.â
âI learned after your father died.â
âAnd you covered it up.â
âI protected the company.â
âYou protected the Hale name.â
Margaret didnât answer.
Victor opened Ameliaâs letter.
Victor,
Your father created the system.
Daniel expanded it.
Your mother concealed it.
But Ethan can end it.
The shares your grandfather gave me are connected to the original holding company.
If Ethanâs trust becomes permanent, Daniel loses the last legal mechanism he has to bury those transactions.
Victor continued reading.
I know you love your family.
But sometimes loving your family means refusing to become them.
His eyes burned.
He turned the page.
One final sentence.
And Lily knows where the second ledger is.
Victor looked up.
Lily wasnât there.
She was at the safe house with Ethan.
He called.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Victorâs pulse accelerated.
He called security.
A guard answered.
âMr. Hale?â
âWhereâs Lily?â
Silence.
âSirâŠâ
Victorâs stomach dropped.
âWhat happened?â
âThe fire alarm went off.â
âWe evacuated.â
âAnd?â
âLily and Ethan are gone.â
Victor almost dropped the phone.
Margaret whispered.
âDaniel.â
Then Victor received a video.
Lily sat tied to a chair.
A bruise darkened her cheek.
Behind her stood Daniel Cross.
Ethan was crying in his arms.
Daniel smiled into the camera.
âBring me the ledger, Victor.â
May you like
âBoth of them.â
âOr your son wonât reach his birthday.â
