Chapter 13 - THE LAST NIGHT AT HALE MANSION

Daniel returned to Hale Mansion during a thunderstorm.

Victor knew he would.

The house had been evacuated except for a tactical team.

Ethan was miles away with Lily.

Or so Daniel believed.

Victor stood in Amelia’s old room.

The hidden floor door was open.

Daniel appeared behind him.

ā€œYou really destroyed everything.ā€

Victor turned.

Daniel looked exhausted.

Desperate.

Dangerous.

ā€œYou destroyed it years ago.ā€

ā€œI made your family rich.ā€

ā€œMy grandfather made us rich.ā€

ā€œMy father made us corrupt.ā€

ā€œYou made us criminals.ā€

Daniel laughed.

ā€œSemantics.ā€

Victor glanced toward the hidden chamber.

ā€œYou came for the ledger.ā€

ā€œI came for the drive.ā€

ā€œWhat drive?ā€

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

ā€œAmelia’s original drive.ā€

Victor understood.

Daniel didn’t know police already had copies.

Victor reached into his pocket.

ā€œLooking for this?ā€

He held up a flash drive.

Daniel raised his gun.

ā€œGive it to me.ā€

Victor tossed it into the hidden chamber.

Daniel ran after it.

Victor followed.

Daniel grabbed the drive.

Then the monitors suddenly turned on.

Amelia’s face appeared across all three screens.

Daniel froze.

Her recorded voice filled the room.

ā€œIf Daniel Cross is watching this, then Victor finally knows.ā€

Daniel turned.

Victor stood at the stairs.

ā€œYou think a dead woman can convict me?ā€

ā€œNo.ā€

Detective Brooks appeared behind Victor.

ā€œBut your confession can.ā€

Daniel looked around.

Tiny microphones had been installed throughout the chamber.

His face collapsed.

Then he raised his gun.

Brooks shouted.

ā€œDrop it!ā€

Daniel fired.

Victor ducked.

Brooks returned fire.

Daniel stumbled.

His weapon fell.

Officers rushed in.

This time, Daniel Cross left Hale Mansion in handcuffs.

Alive.

Surrounded.

Finished.

As they carried him upstairs, Daniel looked at Victor.

ā€œYou’ll always be a Hale.ā€

Victor stared back.

ā€œNo.ā€

May you like

ā€œI’ll be Ethan’s father.ā€

And for the first time, that felt like enough.
