Chapter 6 - LILY’S REAL NAME

Victor returned to the safe house before dawn.

Lily was awake.

She knew immediately something had changed.

“You found Serena.”

“She escaped.”

Victor placed the photographs on the table.

Lily went pale.

“Tell me.”

She stared at Amelia’s face.

Then she sat down.

“My name is Lily Bennett.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You know the name I use.”

“My full name is Lilian Bennett Carter.”

Victor waited.

“My older sister was Amelia’s best friend.”

“Rachel Carter.”

Victor remembered her.

Rachel had attended their wedding.

She had died from cancer four years earlier.

“Before Rachel died, she gave Amelia documents.”

“What documents?”

“Financial records from Hale Holdings.”

Victor frowned.

“How did Rachel get them?”

“She worked for Daniel Cross.”

Everything connected.

“Rachel discovered Daniel was moving company money into offshore accounts.”

“She copied the records.”

“She gave them to Amelia.”

Victor sat slowly.

“And Amelia contacted you.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“She tried.”

“Daniel convinced everyone she was unstable.”

“He controlled who got into your office.”

“He intercepted messages.”

“And after Amelia died
”

Lily swallowed.

“I got scared.”

Victor looked toward Ethan’s room.

“So you became his nanny.”

“Not immediately.”

“I spent almost two years trying to find proof.”

“When Serena advertised for a live-in nanny, I applied.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Victor stood.

Lily didn’t defend herself.

“I’m sorry.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“I trusted you with my son.”

“And I would die before letting anyone hurt him.”

Victor turned sharply.

“Don’t say that.”

Lily blinked.

Victor’s voice softened.

“Ethan has already lost one woman who loved him.”

“He doesn’t need to lose another.”

Silence settled between them.

Then Ethan appeared in the doorway holding his stuffed bear.

“Li-Li.”

Lily immediately wiped her eyes.

“Hey, buddy.”

He walked into her arms.

Victor watched them.

Whatever Lily had hidden, one thing was undeniable.

She loved his son.

Marcus entered.

“Vault 317 is registered to Amelia Hale.”

Victor grabbed his coat.

Rebecca stopped him.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“Someone filed an emergency guardianship petition for Ethan this morning.”

Victor stared at her.

“Who?”

Rebecca turned the document around.

Petitioner:

Margaret Hale.
