Chapter 2 - THE REAL OWNER

Daniel read the message twice.

PROPERTY ACCESS REVIEW INITIATED BY MAJORITY OWNER: EMILY CARTER HOLDINGS.

“That’s impossible,” Patricia whispered.

She grabbed Daniel’s phone and stared at the screen.

“You said the company owned this house.”

“It does.”

Daniel opened the property database on his phone, but his executive password no longer worked.

Across the table, Uncle Robert checked his banking app.

“My company card is frozen.”

“So is mine,” Daniel’s brother said.

Patricia rose so quickly that her chair struck the floor.

“What did that woman do?”

Daniel called the company’s chief financial officer.

Voicemail.

He called the corporate attorney.

Voicemail again.

Finally, his phone rang.

Martin Shaw, the head of security, spoke before Daniel could say anything.

“Mr. Carter, I’ve been instructed to suspend your building access.”

“By whom?”

“The controlling shareholder.”

“I am the controlling shareholder.”

“No, sir.”

Daniel froze.

Martin continued carefully.

“According to the documents delivered tonight, Mrs. Carter controls fifty-eight percent of the voting shares.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“That’s a lie.”

“The signatures have been verified.”

Daniel remembered dozens of documents Emily had brought him over the years.

Loan restructuring agreements.

Emergency capital documents.

Shareholder protections.

He had signed most of them without reading because Emily had always fixed whatever he broke.

Patricia snatched the phone.

“Listen to me. My family built that company.”

“With respect, Mrs. Carter, the original company nearly collapsed nine years ago. Emily Carter’s private trust purchased the debt and funded its recovery.”

Patricia’s face hardened.

“What private trust?”

Daniel knew the answer.

Emily’s father had died eleven years earlier.

She had told Daniel there was an inheritance, but she never discussed the amount.

He had assumed it was small.

He had been wrong.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Three black SUVs stopped outside the mansion.

Patricia rushed toward the foyer.

“Did she call the police?”

Martin’s voice came through the phone.

“Those are private auditors and court-appointed inventory officers. Do not remove anything from the property.”

“This is my home!” Patricia screamed.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Daniel pushed past everyone and opened it.

Arthur Bennett stood outside.

He was the man from the photographs.

Two federal investigators stood behind him.

Bennett held up a sealed order.

“Daniel Carter?”

Daniel stared at him.

“You’re sleeping with my wife.”

Bennett’s expression didn’t change.

“No. I’m investigating your company.”

The relatives who had laughed at Emily fell completely silent.

Bennett handed Daniel the order.

“We have reason to believe Carter Development accounts were used to divert approximately eight million dollars.”

Daniel looked at Patricia.

Her face had gone pale.

“I didn’t steal anything,” he said.

Bennett opened a second folder.

“The transfers were approved using your electronic signature.”

Daniel’s hands began to shake.

Then Bennett showed him the destination account.

The account belonged to Patricia Carter.
