Chapter 11 - THE OTHER WOMAN

Emily waited until the police cars left.
Then she turned to Daniel.
“Who is Claire?”
He didn’t answer quickly enough.
The pain on his face told her this secret belonged to him, not Michael.
“Tell me.”
“Claire Mason worked for us six years ago.”
“I remember her. She left without notice.”
Daniel sat on the steps of the abandoned office.
“She didn’t leave. I paid her to disappear.”
Emily felt the ground shift beneath her.
“Were you sleeping with her?”
“No.”
“Then why did you pay her?”
Daniel stared at his hands.
“Because she discovered the defective materials.”
Emily went still.
“Six years ago?”
“It was a smaller project. Michael told me a supplier had delivered the wrong bolts. He promised they had all been replaced.”
“And Claire?”
“She said the invoices showed it was intentional.”
“What did you do?”
“I accused her of trying to blackmail the company.”
Emily could barely speak.
“You knew.”
“I knew there was one complaint. I didn’t know the fraud continued.”
“You silenced an employee who tried to warn you.”
“I was afraid of losing everything.”
“You were afraid of losing your reputation.”
Daniel looked up.
“I’m telling you the truth now.”
“Because Patricia forced you to.”
Emily stepped away from him.
Daniel had not engineered the scheme, but his cowardice had allowed it to grow.
Every unsafe balcony traced back to the day he chose silence.
Bennett located Claire in North Carolina.
Emily called her personally.
Claire nearly hung up.
“I have nothing to say to Carter Development.”
“I’m not asking you to protect the company.”
“Then what do you want?”
“The truth.”
Claire arrived the next afternoon carrying a red file box.
She had preserved emails, invoices, and recordings.
One recording captured Daniel telling her:
Take the settlement, sign the agreement, and let this go.
Daniel listened without moving.
Claire faced him across the conference table.
“You called me a liar.”
“I was wrong.”
“You ended my career.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t. I lost my home. My husband left because he thought I had destroyed our future. I spent years wondering if I should have fought harder.”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“You should have.”
Emily offered Claire a formal written apology, full compensation, and control of the new safety-review division.
Claire stared at her.
“You would trust me with that?”
“I should have listened the first time.”
Claire agreed to help the investigation.
Her evidence connected Michael to three additional shell companies.
It also revealed that he was not acting alone.
An encrypted email referred to a partner called P.
Everyone assumed P meant Patricia.
Claire shook her head.
“Patricia didn’t understand construction contracts.”
“Then who is P?” Emily asked.
Claire opened the final invoice.
The approval signature belonged to Peter Lang, Carter Development’s chief financial officer.
The same man who had ignored Daniel’s calls on the night Emily was thrown out.
At that exact moment, the building’s lights shut off.

Emergency alarms began flashing.
Smoke poured from beneath the evidence-room door.
