Chapter 14 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL

Emily remembered the morning her brakes felt soft.

She had taken Daniel’s car to work instead.

At the time, she assumed her vehicle needed maintenance.

Michael admitted ordering Peter to damage it.

But the instruction had not originated with Michael.

Patricia had sent the first message.

She believed Emily was preparing to remove Daniel from the company.

She told Michael that without Emily, they could regain control.

Michael turned over the messages in exchange for a reduced sentence on the fraud charges.

The murder investigation involving Thomas remained separate.

Daniel read his mother’s words in stunned silence.

MAKE IT LOOK LIKE AN ACCIDENT.

“She tried to kill you,” he whispered.

Emily looked through the interrogation-room window.

Patricia sat on the other side, perfectly composed.

For ten years, Emily had excused her insults as jealousy.

She had mistaken hatred for cruelty and cruelty for harmless words.

Bennett asked whether Emily wanted to speak with her.

Emily entered the room alone.

Patricia smiled.

“You always wanted my place in this family.”

“I wanted a husband who could think for himself.”

“You turned Daniel against me.”

“No. You finally asked him to sacrifice more than he could ignore.”

Patricia’s smile faded.

“You think he loves you?”

“I think he loved who I allowed him to be.”

That answer struck harder than anger.

Patricia leaned forward.

“You were nobody when he met you.”

“I had the trust that saved your company.”

“Money doesn’t make you important.”

“No. What I did with it does.”

Patricia’s eyes filled with rage.

“My sons should have inherited everything.”

“Michael inherited your belief that consequences were for other people. Daniel inherited your fear of the truth.”

“And what did you inherit?”

Emily stood.

“The strength to walk away.”

Patricia was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Michael confessed to financial fraud, kidnapping Rebecca, attacking Daniel, and administering the medication that killed Thomas.

Peter provided records implicating corrupt inspectors and suppliers across three states.

Carter Development filed for court-supervised restructuring.

Emily sold the corporate jet, the lake house, and several luxury properties to finance repairs and compensate residents.

The mansion was placed on the market.

Patricia’s relatives disappeared the moment the money did.

Three months later, Daniel met Emily in the empty mansion dining room.

The long table was gone.

Only pale marks remained on the floor.

He held divorce papers.

“I signed everything.”

Emily accepted them.

“I’m not fighting your ownership,” he said. “Or the settlement.”

“This was never about taking everything from you.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the place where he had ordered her to leave.

“I keep hearing what I said that night.”

“So do I.”

“I want to fix it.”

“You can’t.”

His eyes reddened.

“Is there any chance for us?”

Emily answered honestly.

“I don’t know who you are without your mother, your name, or the company.”

“Maybe I can find out.”

“You need to do that for yourself.”

Daniel nodded.

He walked toward the door, then stopped.

“Emily, there’s one thing you should know.”

“What?”

“The night of that dinner, I planned to force you out of the company.”

She said nothing.

“My attorney prepared documents. If you had screamed, threatened me, or struck me, I was going to use the recording to claim you were unstable.”

Emily felt the last remaining piece of her marriage break.

Daniel lowered his head.

“You asked if I had planned it. I lied.”

“Why tell me now?”

“Because if I hide one more truth, then I’m still my mother’s son.”

He left the mansion.

Emily stood alone beneath the chandelier.

Her phone rang.

It was Claire.

“We finished the inspection at Westbridge.”

“And?”

“The temporary supports worked, but we found something behind the eastern anchor wall.”

“What kind of thing?”

“A sealed envelope.”

“Whose name is on it?”

Claire paused.

“Yours.”

May you like

“And who signed it?”

“Thomas Carter.”
