Chapter 1 - GET OUT

“Get out of my house, Emily.”
Daniel Carter’s voice cracked across the mansion’s dining room like a gunshot.
Twenty relatives stopped eating.
Crystal glasses hovered above the table.
At the far end of the room, Patricia Carter leaned back in her chair and smiled.
Emily remained standing beside her untouched dinner.
She had spent ten years helping Daniel build Carter Development from a struggling two-person office into one of the largest real estate companies in Virginia.
Yet that night, in front of his entire family, Daniel looked at her as if she were a trespasser.
“You heard me,” he said. “Pack your things and leave.”
Emily glanced around the table.
Daniel’s brother avoided her eyes.
His aunt stared at her plate.
His cousin quietly lifted his phone, eager to record the humiliation.
Only Patricia looked pleased.
She had been waiting years for this moment.
“Daniel,” Emily said calmly, “are you certain you want to do this in front of everyone?”
“I want witnesses.”
“To what?”
“To the end of your little performance.”
Daniel threw a folder onto the table.
Photographs spilled across the polished wood.
They showed Emily leaving a downtown hotel with an older man.
“That’s why you’ve been disappearing,” Daniel said. “You’ve been cheating on me.”
Gasps moved around the room.
Emily studied the photographs without touching them.
The older man was Arthur Bennett, a federal forensic accountant.
Daniel didn’t know that.
Not yet.
Patricia lifted her wineglass.
“My son finally opened his eyes.”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“You didn’t ask me about the photographs.”
“I don’t need your lies.”
“And you already transferred my belongings to the guesthouse?”
Daniel’s expression flickered.
That detail had not been mentioned.
Emily understood immediately.
This had been planned.
The dinner, the accusations, and the witnesses were pieces of the same trap.
Daniel wanted her angry.
He wanted her to scream, threaten him, or say something he could use in court.
Instead, Emily reached for her phone.
Patricia laughed softly.
“Calling your lover?”
Emily ignored her and dialed a number from memory.
A man answered after one ring.
“Bennett.”
Emily stared directly at Daniel.
“Move forward,” she said. “Effective immediately.”
Silence followed.
“Are you absolutely certain?” Bennett asked.
Emily watched Patricia’s smile.
“Yes.”
“What about Daniel?”
“He made his choice.”
Emily ended the call, picked up her purse, and walked toward the front door.
“You’re leaving with nothing!” Daniel shouted after her.
Emily stopped beneath the chandelier.
She didn’t turn around.
“You should check your phone.”
A notification sounded.
Then another.
Within seconds, every Carter family phone began buzzing across the dining table.
Daniel read the first message.
The color drained from his face.
Patricia’s glass slipped from her fingers and shattered.
CARTER DEVELOPMENT: ALL EXECUTIVE ACCOUNTS SUSPENDED PENDING FEDERAL REVIEW.
Daniel looked toward the doorway.
Emily was already gone.
May you like
Then a second notification appeared.
And this one concerned the mansion.
