CHAPTER 14 — SIENNA’S FINAL MESSAGE

CHAPTER 14 — SIENNA’S FINAL MESSAGE

Clara waited until they were home.

The wedding decorations had been removed months earlier.

But faint marks remained where the lights had hung.

Audrey sat beside her at the kitchen table.

Clara inserted the recording.

Sienna’s voice filled the room.

“Clara, I’m recording this because you were always kinder to me than I deserved.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Sienna continued.

“You believe Julian is strong because he never asks for help. But sometimes pride looks like strength until someone learns how to use it.”

Audrey lowered her eyes.

“I’m afraid George is going to show Julian the edited voicemail. If he does, please tell him Audrey tried to save me.”

Clara began crying silently.

“She begged me to go to the police. I told her I could handle George alone. I was wrong.”

Sienna paused.

Then her voice softened.

“Audrey is my sister. She kept that secret because I asked her to. Please don’t let my fear become her punishment.”

The recording ended.

Clara sat in silence.

“I welcomed you as a daughter,” she whispered.

Audrey looked at her.

“You still can.”

Clara broke down.

This time Audrey held her.

Not because they were connected through Julian.

Not because of a marriage.

Because they had chosen each other after everything else had fallen apart.

Three months later, Clara visited Richard in prison.

He looked thinner.

Older.

“I listened to Sienna’s message,” she told him.

Richard nodded.

“I heard about it.”

“I’m not ready to forgive you.”

“I understand.”

“I may never return to our marriage.”

Pain crossed his face.

But he did not argue.

Clara continued.

“However, I will not spend the rest of my life carrying hatred. That is what George did. That is what Julian did.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you must live with what you chose. And I must decide what my life becomes next.”

She stood to leave.

Richard whispered, “Is Audrey all right?”

Clara looked back.

“She’s rebuilding.”

“So are you?”

Clara gave a faint smile.

“I’m learning.”

Outside, Audrey waited in the car.

She held architectural plans for the foundation’s first project—a safety center built beside the repaired Greyford Bridge.

But when Clara entered the car, Audrey handed her a letter.

It had arrived that morning.

From Julian.

On the envelope, he had written:

I will not ask you to forgive me.
