CHAPTER 1 — THE CONFESSION HE WANTED

CHAPTER 1 — THE CONFESSION HE WANTED

“She had to pay.”

Clara stared at her son as if he had become a stranger in front of her.

Julian remained on the bedroom floor, his white dress shirt hanging open at the collar. Sweat glistened across his pale face, but his eyes were dry now.

Cold.

Empty.

Clara’s hands slowly curled into fists.

“What did you do to Audrey?”

Julian looked toward the broken bedroom door.

“I showed her the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That she destroyed Sienna.”

Clara’s breath caught.

Sienna Hale had been Julian’s childhood friend.

Then his first love.

Three years earlier, she had died when her car went through a barrier on an isolated mountain road outside Richmond.

The police called it an accident.

Julian never believed them.

Clara stepped closer.

“You told us you had moved on.”

“I lied.”

The answer came without hesitation.

Clara felt something break inside her.

“You dated Audrey for two years. You proposed to her. You stood in front of everyone today and promised to protect her.”

“I needed her to trust me.”

The cruelty of the sentence landed harder than a slap.

Clara whispered, “What happened in this room?”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“I played Sienna’s final voicemail.”

“And?”

“I asked Audrey to admit what she did.”

“Asked?”

Julian looked away.

Clara’s voice sharpened.

“Did you lock that door?”

Silence.

“Did you threaten her?”

Still nothing.

“Julian!”

“I needed a confession!”

His voice cracked through the room.

Clara flinched.

Julian pushed himself to his feet.

“She kept denying it. She kept saying Sienna called her for help that night. She acted innocent. So I told her she wasn’t leaving until she signed a statement.”

Clara’s face drained white.

“You imprisoned your wife on her wedding night?”

“I didn’t touch her.”

“You didn’t have to!”

Down the hallway, Audrey’s frightened voice suddenly rose.

“Clara!”

Clara ran from the bedroom.

Audrey stood near the guest room, supported by Richard. In her trembling hand was a folded sheet of paper.

A typed confession.

At the bottom was Audrey’s uneven signature.

Richard read it once.

Then again.

His expression hardened.

“This says Audrey deliberately sent Sienna onto that mountain road.”

Julian appeared in the doorway behind them.

“She finally admitted it.”

Audrey shook her head violently.

“No. I signed because he said he would destroy my father’s medical clinic and make sure my mother lost her home.”

Julian’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Clara saw it.

He had expected Audrey to remain silent.

Audrey reached into the hidden pocket of her wedding gown and pulled out her phone.

“The whole conversation was recorded.”

Julian froze.

Audrey pressed the screen.

His own voice filled the hallway.

“Sign it, Audrey. Or by morning, your entire family will have nothing.”

Everyone turned toward Julian.

But the recording wasn’t finished.

A second voice could be heard in the background.

A man’s voice speaking through Julian’s phone.

“Don’t let her leave until she signs.”

Clara slowly looked toward the staircase.

Uncle George stood at the bottom.

His face had gone completely still.

Audrey stared directly at him.

“That was your voice.”

May you like

And for the first time that night—

George looked afraid.
