CHAPTER 12 — THE BRIDGE

CHAPTER 12 — THE BRIDGE
Julian had found stress reports buried in the Westbridge server.
The bridge supports had deteriorated faster than expected.
A freight convoy was scheduled to cross in less than twenty minutes.
Police shut down one side of the highway, but the convoy had already entered the approach.
Julian drove from the Westbridge office while directing emergency crews by phone.
Audrey, Clara and Richard remained near the maintenance lane.
A deep metallic groan traveled through the bridge.
Audrey looked down.
A crack widened along a support joint.
“Everyone off the bridge!”
Officers began evacuating.
The lead freight truck appeared around the curve.
Its driver could not see the blockade ahead.
Julian’s voice came through the radio.
“The damaged support is under the north lane. Move the convoy south.”
“There’s no room,” an officer answered.
Julian studied the old design files.
“There’s an emergency access ramp seventy yards before the bridge.”
“It’s chained.”
Richard grabbed a bolt cutter from the police truck.
“I know where it is.”
Clara stared at him.
“Richard, no.”
“I helped George hide the inspection report. I can help stop this.”
He and two officers ran toward the access ramp.
The bridge groaned again.
Pieces of concrete fell into the river.
Audrey saw Clara standing frozen.
“Move!”
They ran toward solid ground.
Richard reached the chain and cut it seconds before the freight truck arrived.
Officers waved the driver toward the emergency ramp.
The truck swerved.
Its trailer struck the barrier but cleared the damaged section.
The remaining convoy stopped.
Thirty seconds later, a section of the empty north lane collapsed into the gorge.
No one was killed.
Julian arrived and stared at the broken bridge.
Sienna had been right.
People could have died.
Dozens.
Maybe hundreds.
Julian found Audrey near an ambulance.
He stopped several feet away.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
His face tightened.
“I loved you.”
Audrey looked directly at him.
“No. You loved the person you needed me to be until you could punish her.”
“I know that now.”
“You locked me in a room.”
“I know.”
“You watched me beg you to let me leave.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Audrey removed her wedding ring.
Julian stared at it.
She placed it in his palm.
“Our marriage lasted less than one night.”
“Audrey…”
“I will testify against George.”
She stepped back.
“And I will testify against you.”
Police officers approached Julian.
This time, he did not resist.
As they led him away, Clara stood beside Audrey.
The bridge collapsed behind them.

But the greater collapse had already happened—
Inside the family.
