CHAPTER 13 — THE TRIAL

CHAPTER 13 — THE TRIAL
Six months later, the courtroom was full.
George faced charges for murder, fraud, bribery, evidence tampering and endangering public safety.
Richard faced charges for obstruction and accepting illegal payments.
Julian faced charges for unlawful confinement, coercion and extortion.
Audrey sat in the front row beside Clara.
The wedding had been annulled.
She had returned to using her maiden name.
During the trial, George tried to blame everyone else.
Sienna was unstable.
Richard was greedy.
Julian was careless.
Audrey was vindictive.
But the evidence was overwhelming.
The recordings.
The ledger.
The server files.
The photographs.
And George’s confession on Greyford Bridge.
Richard pleaded guilty.
When asked why he had remained silent, he looked at Clara.
“Because I was a coward.”
Clara did not look away.
Richard received a reduced sentence for cooperating, but the judge made one thing clear.
“Fear does not erase responsibility.”
Julian also pleaded guilty.
His attorney argued that grief and manipulation had distorted his judgment.
Julian interrupted him.
“No.”
The courtroom turned.
Julian stood.
“My uncle lied to me. But I chose what I did to Audrey.”
His voice shook.
“I planned the relationship. I proposed. I married her. I threatened her family and kept her from leaving.”
Audrey’s expression remained still.
Julian faced her.
“I do not deserve her forgiveness.”
The judge sentenced him to prison followed by mandatory counseling and community service.
George received life in prison.
As officers led him away, he looked at Clara.
“You’re choosing her over your own family.”
Clara stood.
“No.”
Her voice carried across the courtroom.
“I am choosing the truth over the man who destroyed my family.”
George smiled bitterly.
“She’ll leave you too.”
Audrey reached for Clara’s hand.
George’s smile vanished.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded them.
Audrey refused to discuss the wedding night.
Instead, she held up Sienna’s original safety report.
“My sister died trying to protect people she would never meet.”
Behind her, families from the four endangered projects gathered silently.
Audrey announced the creation of the Sienna Hale Public Safety Foundation.
Then a reporter asked Clara whether she planned to reconcile with Richard.
Clara looked toward the courthouse doors.
“I don’t know.”
At that moment, an officer approached Audrey with a sealed evidence envelope.
It contained one final recording from Sienna.

A recording no one had heard.
And it was addressed to Clara.
