Chapter 3 — The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

Marcus didn’t call the police.
Not yet.
He knew the sheriff worked for the Sterlings.
Instead, he called someone else.
Colonel Daniel Hayes.
His former commanding officer.
“I need help.”
There was silence on the phone.
“Marcus, what happened?”
“My daughter was attacked.”
The colonel’s voice changed instantly.
“Who?”
“The Sterling family.”
A long pause followed.
Because everyone knew that name.
“You’re sure?”
Marcus looked through the hospital window at Lily sleeping.
“Yes.”
Within twenty-four hours, Marcus began building a private investigation.
Not revenge.
Evidence.
Then, three days later…
his phone received an encrypted message.
Unknown sender.
One file.
A video.
Marcus opened it.
His entire body went still.
The footage showed the Sterling driveway.
The night Lily was attacked.
Two men surrounded her.
Her screams.
Her fear.
And then…
the second-floor window.
A woman standing behind the glass.
Lily’s mother.
Emily.
Watching.
Marcus stopped breathing.
She saw everything.
Then slowly…
she closed the curtains.
Marcus stared at the screen.

The betrayal hurt more than the attack.
Because Lily’s own mother had chosen silence.
