Chapter 2 — The Family That Owned Sterling Falls

Everyone in Sterling Falls knew the Sterling name.
They owned the largest timber company.
They controlled local businesses.
They donated money to politicians.
Their names were carved into hospital walls and courthouse foundations.
People didn’t challenge the Sterlings.
They survived them.
Marcus had returned to town believing the law protected everyone.
But after Lily’s attack, he discovered the truth.
Power protected itself.
The first person Marcus confronted was Richard Sterling.
The family patriarch.
The man everyone called “the king of Sterling Falls.”
Marcus entered the Sterling mansion alone.
Richard sat in his office, drinking whiskey.
“You’re angry,” Richard said calmly.
“My daughter is in the hospital.”
Richard didn’t even look surprised.
“Children get hurt.”
Marcus stared at him.
“Not like this.”
A cold smile appeared on Richard’s face.
“You’re a soldier, Marcus. You should understand reality.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“My daughter was beaten in your driveway.”
Richard leaned back.
“Be careful.”
The warning was clear.
Not a threat.
Something worse.
Confidence.
Because Richard Sterling truly believed Marcus could do nothing.
Before Marcus left, one of Lily’s uncles walked past him.
He whispered:
“Your little girl should have learned not to talk.”
Marcus stopped.
But he didn’t react.
Years in the military had taught him something important.
The loudest person in the room usually loses.
Marcus walked away silently.
But before leaving the mansion…
he noticed something.
A security camera above the driveway.

And he knew.
The Sterlings had just made their biggest mistake.
