Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Destroyed Her Own Family

By afternoon, the hospital had changed.
The nurses looked nervous.
Doctors avoided eye contact.
People who had smiled at me yesterday suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Because rumors spread faster than truth.
And Doreen knew exactly how to use that.
When I walked through the hallway with my baby, I heard whispers.
“That’s her.”
“The one with anxiety issues.”
“My goodness, she just gave birth.”
I stopped.
My heart broke.
Not because strangers judged me.
Because I realized Doreen had already rewritten the story.
She made herself the protector.
And me the problem.
Then I saw Nathan.
Standing near the elevator.
Waiting.
“Leah.”
I kept walking.
“Please.”
I stopped.
But I didn’t turn around.
“Why?”
Silence.
“Why are you doing this?”
His voice cracked.
“I’m trying to help you.”
I finally looked at him.
“No.”
“You’re trying to help yourself.”
His face tightened.
“That’s not fair.”
“Fair?”
I laughed.
“You planned to take our son.”
“I never said that.”
“I heard you.”
Nathan looked away.
For the first time…
he looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Leah…”
“What?”
He lowered his voice.
“My mother knows people.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you don’t understand what you’re fighting.”
The words chilled me.
Because he wasn’t warning me.
He was telling me I couldn’t win.
“Did she threaten you?”
Nathan said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did she do?”
He looked at the floor.
“When I was younger…”
He stopped.
Then continued.
“My father tried to leave her.”
I waited.
“He disappeared from our lives.”
“What does that mean?”
Nathan swallowed.
“She convinced everyone he was unstable.”
My heart stopped.
The room felt smaller.
“She did the same thing?”
Nathan nodded slowly.
“She made everyone believe he couldn’t take care of us.”
“And you believed her?”
“I was twelve.”
His voice broke.
“I had nobody else.”
For the first time, I saw something beneath Nathan’s loyalty.
Fear.
Years of fear.
But then my anger returned.
“You knew what she was capable of.”
“Yes.”
“And you still helped her.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I thought I could control it.”
“You thought you could control your mother?”
He had no answer.
Because he knew.
He never controlled Doreen.
Doreen controlled him.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Mrs. Carver?”
“Yes.”
“This is Detective Hannah Wells.”
My body went still.
“Why is the police calling me?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because we found something unusual in your medical records.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?”
“The psychiatric evaluation request was created before you even gave birth.”
I looked at Nathan.
His face went pale.
Detective Wells continued.
“And Mrs. Carver…”
“Yes?”
“The person who submitted the request…”
Another pause.
“The request came from your mother-in-law’s personal email account.”
The hallway disappeared.
Everything went silent.
Because now I knew.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This wasn’t concern.
May you like
This was planned.
And the person behind it had been preparing to take my son before he was even born.
