Chapter 5 - The Secret Simone Was Forced To Carry

The next morning, I woke up to an empty chair beside my bed.
Mae was gone.
Dr. Marsh was gone.
And my phone was missing.
For several seconds, panic took over.
Then I saw it.
Placed neatly on the table.
Not stolen.
Moved.
Someone had searched through it.
I picked it up.
The recording was gone.
My hands started shaking.
They found it.
I immediately called Mae.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then the room door opened.
Simone walked in.
But she wasn’t alone.
A man stood behind her.
A tall man wearing an expensive suit.
“Leah.”
Simone looked terrified.
The man smiled.
“I’m Victor.”
I stared at him.
“I didn’t invite you.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“But I think we need to talk.”
Simone looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
My stomach dropped.
“What did you do?”
She looked away.
Victor answered.
“She made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“She helped you.”
I looked at Simone.
“What is he talking about?”
Victor stepped closer.
“Your little recording.”
My blood went cold.
“You deleted it.”
He smiled.
“No.”
A pause.
“Someone else did.”
I understood immediately.
Nathan.
Or Doreen.
Victor continued.
“Your husband wants this situation resolved peacefully.”
I laughed.
“Peacefully?”
“You mean quietly.”
His smile disappeared.
“You should be careful.”
There it was.
The threat.
Hidden behind polite words.
“I am the mother of that baby.”
Victor looked at my son.
“That is exactly why you should cooperate.”
Simone suddenly stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Victor looked at her.
“Stay out of this.”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“But she deserves to know.”
I looked at Simone.
“What?”
Simone swallowed.
“My husband works with Doreen.”
My heart sank.
“How long?”
“Months.”
“Why?”
Simone looked ashamed.
“Because Doreen wanted someone close to you.”
“She wanted information.”
I remembered every conversation.
Every moment Simone watched me.
Every question.
“You were spying on me.”
“At first.”
She looked down.
“Then I realized what they were planning.”
Victor interrupted.
“She is emotional.”
Simone turned toward him.
“No.”
“She is telling the truth.”
Victor’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked worried.
Simone continued.
“Doreen has done this before.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“She takes control when people become inconvenient.”
My chest tightened.
“Who else?”
Simone looked at Victor.
Then at me.
“Her first husband.”
Silence.
“What happened?”
Simone whispered,
“He tried to leave.”
May you like
“And?”
“He lost everything.”
