Chapter 3 - The File Hidden Under My Name

That night, I barely slept.

Every sound in the hospital made me wake up.

Every footstep made me think Nathan was coming back.

Every voice in the hallway reminded me that people were making decisions about my child without me.

At 3:17 in the morning, my hospital door opened.

I immediately sat up.

But it wasn’t Nathan.

It was Mae.

She looked terrified.

“Leah.”

“What happened?”

She held a folder.

A hospital folder.

With my name printed across the front.

I felt my heart stop.

“What is that?”

Mae locked the door.

Then she placed it on the table.

“This was entered into your medical record tonight.”

I opened it.

The first page made my hands shake.

Psychological Concern Evaluation Request.

I looked at Mae.

“I never requested this.”

“I know.”

“Who did?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

I already knew.

Doreen.

Nathan.

My own husband.

I turned the page.

There were notes.

Claims.

Lies.

“She has extreme anxiety.”

“She demonstrates irrational fear.”

“She believes family members may harm her child.”

My eyes burned.

They had taken my love for my baby.

My protection.

My instinct.

And turned it into evidence against me.

Then I saw the signature.

I stopped.

Because the person who approved the evaluation wasn’t a stranger.

It was Dr. Celia Rusk.

The doctor I trusted.

The woman who told me to go to the hospital.

“The doctor signed this?”

Mae nodded.

“I think she was pressured.”

“But she signed it.”

“Yes.”

I closed the folder.

Something inside me changed.

The fear was still there.

The pain was still there.

But something stronger appeared.

Determination.

“They want me to look crazy.”

Mae nodded.

“Then we have to make sure everyone sees the truth.”

I looked at my sleeping son.

“No.”

Mae looked surprised.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“They don’t just need to see the truth.”

“They need to hear it.”

I picked up my phone.

The recording was still there.

The conversation outside the supply room.

Nathan’s voice.

Doreen’s voice.

The plan.

Everything.

But before I could press play, my phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Mae looked at me.

“Don’t answer.”

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then I saw the caller ID change.

The hospital system recognized the number.

Psychiatric Services Department.

My blood went cold.

I answered.

A woman spoke calmly.

“Mrs. Carver?”

“Yes.”

“This is Dr. Evelyn Marsh.”

“I’m calling regarding your mental health evaluation.”

I looked at Mae.

She shook her head.

The woman continued.

“We need to speak with you immediately.”

I swallowed.

“Why?”

A pause.

Then the woman said,

“Because your husband and mother-in-law reported concerns that you may attempt to leave the hospital with the baby against medical advice.”

My fingers went numb.

They had already started.

They were building their story.

A story where I was the danger.

A story where they were the rescuers.

I looked at my son.

Then I answered.

“Doctor…”

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I think you need to hear something first.”

“What?”

I looked at the locked door.

At Mae.

At the evidence sitting beside me.

And I said,

“I have a recording of my husband and his mother planning to take my baby away from me.”

Silence.

Then Dr. Marsh asked one question.

A question I would never forget.

“Mrs. Carver…”

“Are you saying your husband is involved?”

I looked down at my baby.

And whispered,

May you like

“Yes.”

“He is the reason I’m hiding.”
