Chapter 14 - The Day The Truth Finally Spoke

The custody hearing happened three days later.

I walked into the courtroom carrying my son.

Not because I wanted sympathy.

Because I refused to hide.

Doreen entered minutes later.

She looked confident.

Almost relaxed.

She smiled at everyone.

She greeted the judge politely.

She acted like she had done nothing wrong.

That was the most terrifying thing about her.

She believed she was right.

The judge reviewed the documents.

Then looked at Nathan.

“Mr. Carver, did you request emergency custody?”

Nathan stood.

“No.”

Doreen’s lawyer immediately objected.

“Your Honor, my client has evidence showing otherwise.”

The lawyer handed over documents.

The same fake paperwork.

The same false signature.

The same trap.

Then Nathan did something unexpected.

He walked toward the judge.

And placed another document down.

“What is this?”

The judge looked at him.

Nathan answered,

“A confession.”

The courtroom became silent.

His lawyer looked shocked.

Doreen’s expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

Nathan continued.

“I allowed my mother access to private information.”

“I believed she was helping.”

“I was wrong.”

He looked at me.

“I failed my wife.”

Then he looked at the judge.

“But I never requested custody.”

The judge examined the documents.

“Are you claiming these signatures are forged?”

“Yes.”

Doreen’s lawyer stood.

“This is an emotional husband protecting his wife.”

Nathan turned.

“No.”

His voice was steady.

“This is a son finally telling the truth about his mother.”

Then Emily entered.

The courtroom changed instantly.

Because Doreen’s own daughter was now walking against her.

Emily sat down.

And the recording was played.

Doreen’s voice filled the courtroom.

“If Leah disappears from the picture, Nathan will finally become the man I raised him to be.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then came the final sentence.

“I know exactly how to destroy my own son.”

Doreen’s face turned pale.

For the first time…

she looked small.

The judge listened carefully.

Then asked:

“Mrs. Carver.”

Doreen looked up.

“Do you deny this recording?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she couldn’t control the truth.

But then Doreen smiled.

A small smile.

Almost impossible to notice.

And I knew.

She had something else.

She leaned toward her lawyer.

Whispered something.

The lawyer looked surprised.

Then immediately requested a recess.

Everyone left the room.

Nathan looked at me.

“What was that?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

But I knew one thing.

Doreen never walked into a fight without a weapon.

Ten minutes later, the lawyer returned.

He carried a new document.

“My client has additional evidence.”

My heart sank.

The judge looked confused.

“What evidence?”

The lawyer placed a sealed envelope on the table.

“Information regarding Mrs. Carver’s pregnancy history.”

I froze.

“My pregnancy?”

The lawyer looked at me.

“No.”

Then he turned toward Nathan.

“Mr. Carver’s.”

Everyone became silent.

Nathan looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

The lawyer opened the envelope.

Then removed a report.

A DNA report.

My heart stopped.

“What is that?”

Nobody answered.

The lawyer looked at Nathan.

“This report questions whether you are the biological father of the child.”

The courtroom exploded with whispers.

I looked at Nathan.

He looked completely shocked.

Because he had never seen that document.

Doreen had saved her final weapon.

May you like

She wasn’t just trying to take my baby.

She was trying to destroy my marriage completely.
