CHAPTER 8 — THE LEGACY MY FATHER LEFT ME

One year later the gardens surrounding Blackthorn Manor were filled with laughter instead of fear.

Children played beneath the same trees where helicopters had once landed.

Women who had escaped violent homes now rebuilt their lives there.

My father stood beside me overlooking the estate.

"You know," he said softly, "I never wanted you to inherit my fortune."

I smiled.

"I know."

"You wanted me to inherit your principles."

He nodded.

"Money protects comfort."

"Character protects generations."

I looked at the sapphire pendant resting in my hand.

It had once recorded the darkest night of my life.

Now it reminded me of something far more important.

Power is never measured by wealth.

It is measured by what you choose to protect.

Nathan believed two hundred lashes would erase my identity.

Instead...

Every strike exposed his own.

And in trying to destroy the woman he believed was powerless...

He awakened the family that had quietly protected her all along.

Some men inherit empires.

Others lose them because they mistake kindness for weakness.

Nathan Ashford lost everything the moment he forgot that love can be patient...

But justice never forgets.
