Chapter 5 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE LIE

I stared at the photograph.

My own image stared back at me.

Standing.

Walking.

No wheelchair.

No weakness.

No act.

Someone knew.

The question was...

Who?

Marcus stood across from my desk.

"We checked every camera in the house."

"And?"

"Someone disabled the security system for exactly four minutes."

"Professional?"

He nodded.

"Very."

I looked at the photograph again.

Only a few people had access to my private office.

My family.

My employees.

My closest friends.

The same people I was testing.

The same people I was watching.

That night, I invited everyone to the mansion.

Vanessa arrived first.

Then Daniel.

Then my uncle Martin.

They all looked confused.

"What's going on?" Daniel asked.

I stayed silent.

The wheelchair sat beside me.

Still part of the performance.

Vanessa looked around.

"Alexander, what is this about?"

I slowly looked at everyone.

"I found out someone has been lying to me."

Nobody moved.

Daniel forced a small laugh.

"Alexander, you're still recovering. Maybe you're misunderstanding things."

There it was.

The excuse.

The same excuse everyone used.

Maybe he's confused.

Maybe he's emotional.

Maybe he can't handle the truth.

I smiled.

"Maybe."

Then I placed the photograph on the table.

Vanessa saw it.

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

And I noticed him noticing.

Someone knew.

Someone had seen this before.

I turned toward him.

"Daniel."

His smile disappeared.

"Yes?"

"Why did Vanessa send you money three months ago?"

The room froze.

Vanessa immediately turned.

"Alexander..."

Marcus placed documents on the table.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Proof.

Daniel looked at the evidence.

Then looked at me.

The man I trusted for ten years.

The man who knew everything about my life.

Finally whispered:

"You were never supposed to find out."

Those words hurt more than any lie.

Because they confirmed everything.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Daniel, stop talking."

Too late.

The truth had already started coming out.

I looked at both of them.

"You spent months planning my downfall."

Nobody answered.

Then something changed.

I slowly moved my hand toward the wheelchair.

Everyone watched.

They expected me to remain seated.

They expected the broken man.

The helpless man.

The man they could control.

Then I stood up.

The entire room stopped breathing.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel stepped backward.

My uncle dropped his glass.

Clara stood near the doorway.

She didn't look shocked.

She looked relieved.

I looked at every person who had betrayed me.

And said:

"You spent three months celebrating my fall."

I took one step forward.

"But you forgot one thing."

Another step.

"I was watching."

Vanessa's face lost all color.

Because she finally understood.

The wheelchair was never my prison.

It was my trap.

And everyone who tried to destroy me...

May you like

had just walked right into it.
