Chapter 14 - THE LAST LIE

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I couldn’t.

Because every emotion arrived at once.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Pain.

Twenty years.

Twenty years believing I lost my mother.

Twenty years visiting a grave.

Twenty years missing someone who was standing right in front of me.

I finally found my voice.

“You’re alive.”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

She took a step forward.

“I had no choice.”

“No choice?”

My voice broke.

“You had twenty years.”

“I know.”

“You had every birthday.”

“I know.”

“Every Christmas.”

“I know.”

“Every time I needed my mother.”

Her tears fell.

“I know.”

And that made me angrier.

Because she knew.

She knew everything she missed.

My father stepped between us.

“Enough.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

My voice was stronger now.

“No more secrets.”

Both of them looked at me.

“No more protecting me.”

I wiped my tears.

“No more deciding what I can handle.”

For the first time in my life…

my parents listened.

My mother sat down.

Then she told me the truth.

Twenty years ago, she discovered someone was using their companies to move illegal money.

Someone powerful.

Someone protected.

When she tried to expose them, she became a target.

“They tried to kill me.”

My breath caught.

“Who?”

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Someone inside our family.”

The room went silent.

“Who?”

My mother hesitated.

Then said:

“Beatriz de la Vega.”

I froze.

Alejandro’s mother.

The woman who had spent years looking down on me.

My mother continued.

“Beatriz wanted access to Arturo’s company.”

My father closed his eyes.

“She manipulated Rafael.”

“And Victor?”

“She used him.”

I shook my head.

“How?”

My mother looked at me.

“By convincing everyone that your father was the enemy.”

Suddenly everything connected.

The marriage.

The affair.

The financing.

The leaked documents.

It was never just about money.

It was revenge.

A plan that started twenty years ago.

And I had been the final piece.

I called Alejandro.

He answered immediately.

“Valeria?”

“Your mother.”

Silence.

“What about her?”

“She was involved.”

Long silence.

Then:

“I don’t believe you.”

Of course.

He protected her.

Even now.

“Ask her.”

“Valeria—”

“No.”

My voice became cold.

“You wanted the truth.”

A pause.

“Now you get it.”

That night, Alejandro came to my father’s house.

But he didn’t come alone.

Beatriz came with him.

The moment she saw my mother…

her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

My mother looked at her.

“You never thought I would come back.”

Beatriz said nothing.

For once…

she had no words.

My father stepped forward.

“Twenty years.”

His voice was calm.

“Twenty years of lies.”

Beatriz smiled slowly.

“You think you’ve won?”

Nobody answered.

Because something about her confidence was terrifying.

She looked at me.

Not my father.

Not my mother.

Me.

“You still don’t understand, Valeria.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

She smiled.

“Your father didn’t lose his company because of me.”

A pause.

“He lost it because of you.”

The room froze.

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?”

Beatriz walked closer.

“Ask your mother.”

Everyone looked at Elena.

My mother’s face changed.

And I knew.

There was one more secret.

One more truth.

One more lie.

My mother whispered:

“Valeria…”

I held my breath.

“What?”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“You were never supposed to inherit Grupo Vanguardia.”

May you like

A pause.

“You were supposed to destroy it.”
