Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

I stared at the photograph.
Again.
And again.
Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
My mother.
Alive.
Standing inside Grupo Vanguardia’s private archive.
The place where only the highest-level executives had access.
The place where secrets were buried.
My hands started shaking.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
“No.”
My father walked into the room.
One look at my face and he knew something happened.
“What is it?”
I turned the screen toward him.
He stopped.
For the first time in my life…
my father looked completely broken.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Broken.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone sent it to me.”
His eyes stayed on the image.
“That’s impossible.”
I laughed.
A cold, painful laugh.
“Funny.”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
I pointed at the picture.
“My husband loving me was impossible.”
“My uncle betraying us was impossible.”
“My mother being alive is impossible.”
I stepped closer.
“But somehow, impossible keeps happening.”
My father didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
An hour later, we were standing inside the archive.
Security had checked everything.
No one knew how the person entered.
No alarms.
No records.
Nothing.
Almost like a ghost.
My father walked slowly through the room.
Then he stopped.
A small wooden box sat on the table.
My name was written on it.
Valeria.
My heart dropped.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
“Don’t touch it.”
“Why?”
His voice became serious.
“Because your mother was always three steps ahead of everyone.”
I stared at the box.
“You’re saying she planned this?”
“I’m saying…”
He paused.
“She knew this day would come.”
Inside the box were letters.
Dozens.
All addressed to me.
But dated years earlier.
I opened the first one.
My mother’s handwriting.
The handwriting I barely remembered.
My dear Valeria,
If you are reading this, then something happened that forced the truth into the open.
I stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
Your father will tell you he wanted to protect you.
And he did.
But protection is not the same as honesty.
Tears filled my eyes.
Because those words sounded exactly like what I had been feeling.
I looked at my father.
He looked away.
The letter continued.
There are people around you who love you.
And there are people who love what you represent.
Learn the difference.
The next letters revealed pieces of the past.
My mother had discovered the original betrayal.
But it wasn’t my father.
It wasn’t Rafael.
It wasn’t Victor.
It was someone else.
Someone who manipulated all of them.
Someone who created years of hatred between families.
Someone who benefited while everyone else destroyed each other.
At the bottom of the last letter was one name.
The person who started everything.
My mother wrote:
The person you should fear is not the one who hates you.
It is the one who smiles while standing beside you.
I looked at my father.
“Who was she talking about?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
His face changed.
And I knew.
He knew.
“You’ve known.”
A painful silence.
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Who?”
Before he could answer, the archive door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakable.
My mother.
Elena Mendoza.
Alive.
She looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“I’m sorry it took me so long to come back.”
