Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS FRAMED

The headline was everywhere.
GRUPO VANGUARDIA UNDER INVESTIGATION.
I read it again.
Then again.
But the words didn’t change.
The documents leaked.
The confidential files.
The illegal transfer.
Everything pointed back to one person.
Me.
My name.
My signature.
My authorization.
My reputation.
Destroyed in one night.
My father stood beside me, staring at the screen.
For the first time in my life, I saw something I never thought I would see.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Valeria.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“Do you understand what this means?”
I laughed softly.
“Apparently I destroyed your company.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Pretend this doesn’t hurt.”
That made me angry.
Because it did hurt.
More than I wanted to admit.
“I spent my entire life trying to prove I wasn’t just your daughter.”
My voice cracked.
“And now someone used your name to destroy me.”
My father stepped closer.
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps telling me to listen.”
I looked around the office.
“You.”
“Alejandro.”
“Daniel.”
“Camila.”
“Everyone has a secret.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“And I’m always the last person to know.”
My father went silent.
Because he knew I was right.
The board meeting started two hours later.
Nobody waited.
Nobody cared that I was his daughter.
They cared about the damage.
Executives who once respected me suddenly avoided eye contact.
People who smiled at me yesterday whispered today.
One man stood.
“Arturo, we need temporary leadership changes.”
My father looked at him.
“Choose your words carefully.”
The man swallowed.
“This isn’t personal.”
I almost smiled.
Business people always said that right before making something personal.
Then another executive placed a folder on the table.
“Evidence shows Ms. Mendoza approved the transaction.”
Everyone looked at me.
I opened the folder.
The signature was mine.
The handwriting looked perfect.
Too perfect.
I studied it.
Something bothered me.
Then I saw it.
A small detail.
The date.
I looked up.
“This document is fake.”
The room went quiet.
The executive frowned.
“You signed it.”
“No.”
I pointed at the paper.
“This signature was copied from a different authorization form.”
He laughed.
“Are you saying someone forged your signature?”
“Yes.”
“And you expect us to believe that?”
I looked directly at him.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Because I finally understood something.
The person behind this wasn’t trying to destroy my father.
They were trying to destroy me.
I leaned forward.
“Because whoever did this knows me.”
After the meeting, my father followed me into the hallway.
“You noticed the signature.”
“Yes.”
“That means you know what to look for.”
I stopped walking.
“What are you saying?”
He smiled slightly.
“You’re ready.”
“For what?”
“For the part where you stop defending yourself…”
A pause.
“And start hunting.”
That night, I made a list.
Everyone involved.
Alejandro.
Camila.
Daniel.
The board member who pushed for my removal.
The executives with access.
Then I added one more name.
Someone nobody suspected.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Beatriz de la Vega.
Because there was one thing I had learned.
People reveal themselves when they think they are better than you.
And Beatriz had spent three years showing me exactly who she was.
The next morning, I received an envelope.
No address.
No sender.
Only my name.
Inside was one photograph.
My mother.
Young.
Standing beside Rafael Serrano.
And on the back, one sentence.
YOUR FATHER LIED ABOUT HOW YOUR MOTHER DIED.
I dropped the photo.
Because suddenly…
this was no longer about my marriage.
May you like
It was about my family.
And someone had been waiting twenty years for me to find out.
