Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

We found Odette’s car abandoned three miles from the estate.

The driver’s door was open.

Her phone was still inside.

Her purse was untouched.

But she was gone.

That meant one thing.

She didn’t leave willingly.

I stood beside the car while rain fell around me.

Prescott looked at me.

“Lawson.”

I stared at the empty road.

“Someone is cleaning up.”

He nodded.

“They’re scared.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“They’re confident.”

Because scared people ran.

Confident people erased evidence.

And whoever was behind this believed they were untouchable.

Back at the mansion, Clara was waiting.

She looked at the car keys in my hand.

“You found her?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Her face changed.

Then she whispered:

“They’re moving faster.”

I looked at her.

“Explain.”

“Genevieve told me something before she died.”

“What?”

“She said if anything happened to Odette
”

She paused.

“
then the person responsible knew the investigation had started.”

I walked closer.

“What investigation?”

Clara looked at me.

“The one Genevieve started before her death.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“My wife was investigating someone.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Clara reached into her bag.

This time, she pulled out a small flash drive.

“She left this for you.”

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?”

“Because I didn’t trust anyone.”

“Not even me?”

Her eyes softened.

“I trusted you.”

“Then why wait?”

“Because Genevieve told me to.”

My heart stopped.

“She knew I would find you?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Clara looked toward the hallway where my children slept.

“Because she knew you would do anything to save them.”

I took the flash drive.

“What’s on it?”

Clara swallowed.

“Proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Her voice dropped.

“Proof that the person who destroyed your family has been standing beside you the entire time.”

I connected the drive to the computer.

A video file appeared.

Date:

Two years ago.

The day before Genevieve died.

I pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Then my wife appeared.

Alive.

Terrified.

Looking directly into the camera.

“Lawson
”

My breath stopped.

Her voice shook.

“If you’re watching this, it means I couldn’t stop them.”

I moved closer.

Genevieve looked behind her like she was afraid someone was listening.

“Please don’t trust anyone.”

A tear rolled down her face.

“Not even the person you think would never betray you.”

The video suddenly glitched.

Then Genevieve said four words that froze my entire body.

“The twins’ illness
”

Static filled the screen.

I leaned closer.

“What?”

The video returned for one second.

Just one second.

Long enough for me to hear her final sentence.

“Lawson
 someone is poisoning our children.”

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because the truth was finally in front of me.

My children weren’t just dying.

Someone was killing them.

And the person responsible

May you like

was someone who had been inside my home all along.
