Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH BURIED UNDER HER NAME

The old hospital file sat on my desk like a loaded weapon.

One piece of paper.

One signature.

One hidden truth that could destroy everything I believed about my family.

Clara stood across from me, silent.

“You knew about this,” I said.

Her face tightened.

“I knew Genevieve was investigating.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked down.

“I knew she was afraid.”

I picked up the file.

“My wife was poisoned?”

Clara didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My hands tightened around the folder.

For two years, I had believed Genevieve died because of a tragic accident.

I had buried her.

I had mourned her.

I had raised our children alone.

And now I was discovering that someone had taken her from me.

Someone had tried to erase her.

“Who did this?”

Clara shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

I slammed the folder onto the desk.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

My voice echoed through the room.

“You walk into my house knowing secrets about my wife. You know about my children. You know someone is targeting my family. But every time I ask who did it, you say you don’t know.”

Clara didn’t flinch.

“Because the person behind this is someone you would never suspect.”

I stared at her.

“Try me.”

She took a slow breath.

“Genevieve believed the person helping her was someone close.”

My stomach tightened.

“Close how?”

“Close enough to know everything.”

The room became silent.

My mind immediately went through every person around us.

Employees.

Friends.

Business partners.

Family.

People I trusted.

People who had access.

People who smiled in my face while hiding knives behind their backs.

A knock interrupted us.

Prescott entered.

“Lawson.”

I turned.

“What?”

“We found something.”

He placed a small envelope on the desk.

“It was hidden inside the twins’ room.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

Prescott looked uncomfortable.

“It was under Blythe’s pillow.”

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

Someone had been inside my children’s room.

Someone had stood close enough to touch them.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

Written in black ink.

STOP LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.

OR YOU WILL LOSE BOTH CHILDREN BEFORE TEN DAYS END.

My vision blurred with rage.

I crushed the paper in my hand.

Clara whispered:

“They know you found out.”

I looked at her.

“And now they know I’m coming for them.”

But before I could say anything else, the medical alarm from upstairs began screaming.

My heart dropped.

Jonah.

May you like

Blythe.

I ran.
