Chapter 14 - THE LAST TEN DAYS

The doctors said Jonah and Blythe had ten days.

The enemy gave us ten days.

And now I understood.

The countdown was never about their illness.

It was a warning.

A message.

A game.

Someone wanted me to suffer.

But they made one mistake.

They underestimated how far a father would go.

By morning, I had locked down the entire Mercer estate.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

Every employee was questioned.

Every device was examined.

Every secret was dragged into the light.

But one person was missing.

Dr. Yates.

And without him, the only person who could explain the truth had disappeared.

Clara sat beside me in the security room.

“You look like you haven’t slept.”

“I haven’t.”

“You need rest.”

I looked at the monitors showing Jonah and Blythe sleeping.

“I rest when they’re safe.”

She was quiet.

Then she placed something on the table.

A small key.

I looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Genevieve gave it to me.”

I picked it up.

“What does it open?”

“The place where she hid the real evidence.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know if we could trust anyone.”

I looked at her.

“Do you trust me now?”

She nodded.

“More than anyone.”

The key opened a hidden compartment beneath Genevieve’s old office.

Inside was a small box.

A letter.

And a recording device.

My hands shook when I pressed play.

Genevieve’s voice filled the room.

“Lawson, if you are hearing this, then you know the truth is worse than we imagined.”

I closed my eyes.

“I need you to understand something.”

Her voice cracked.

“I wasn’t trying to hide anything from you.”

A pause.

“I was trying to protect you.”

The recording continued.

“The person behind this isn’t trying to kill the children immediately.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Genevieve continued.

“They are controlling the timing.”

My blood ran cold.

“They want you desperate.”

The recording clicked.

Then came the final sentence.

“They want you to make a mistake.”

The audio ended.

Clara looked at me.

“They planned everything.”

I nodded.

“They wanted me angry.”

“Yes.”

“They wanted me blind.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the files.

“Then we stop playing their game.”

At that moment, Prescott entered.

His face was pale.

“Lawson.”

“What happened?”

He held a folder.

“We found the financial records.”

I opened it.

The account belonged to a company I didn’t recognize.

But the signature attached to it

made my entire body freeze.

Because it was signed by someone who had access to everything.

Someone who had been beside me through every tragedy.

Someone who knew my wife.

Someone who knew my children.

Someone I considered family.

I looked up.

“Bring them here.”

Prescott swallowed.

“Lawson
”

May you like

“Now.”

Because the person who destroyed my family was finally going to answer for it.
