Chapter 10 - THE NAME HIDDEN IN THE FILE

For five seconds, nobody in the security room moved.

The video had ended.

But Genevieve’s voice remained.

Someone is poisoning our children.

The sentence replayed inside my head again and again.

Someone was killing my children.

Not a disease.

Not bad luck.

Not a cruel twist of fate.

A person.

A real person.

Someone close enough to reach them.

Close enough to hide behind a smile.

I slowly turned toward Dr. Yates.

He had been standing near the doorway.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“You knew.”

His face changed.

“Lawson
”

“You knew something was wrong.”

He looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

I stepped toward him.

“How long?”

Dr. Yates swallowed.

“Since the first blood test.”

The room became colder.

“Explain.”

He looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this secret for years.

“When Jonah and Blythe first became sick, their results didn’t make sense.”

My hands tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“Children with leukemia have patterns. Their bodies react in certain ways.”

He looked at the twins’ medical files.

“But theirs were different.”

“Different how?”

“There were signs that something else was happening.”

My voice dropped.

“Something else?”

Dr. Yates nodded.

“There were traces of a substance in their blood.”

Clara covered her mouth.

“What substance?”

He hesitated.

“A rare compound. Something that can damage the immune system over time.”

I stared at him.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I tried.”

The words hit the room.

“What?”

Dr. Yates looked at me.

“Someone stopped me.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

That made me furious.

“Who?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Your wife.”

The room froze.

I felt anger rise instantly.

“Don’t you dare blame Genevieve.”

“I’m not.”

“Then explain.”

Dr. Yates looked at the floor.

“Genevieve discovered it before I did.”

My breathing slowed.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she believed someone was listening.”

I remembered the letter.

Don’t trust everyone around you.

The fear in her handwriting.

The warning hidden between the lines.

I looked at Clara.

“She knew.”

Clara nodded.

“She was trying to protect you.”

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

“Who is this?”

A distorted voice responded.

“You finally understand.”

My entire body went still.

“Where are my children?”

A quiet laugh.

“You still think this is about your children?”

My grip tightened.

“Tell me who you are.”

The voice ignored me.

“Genevieve was always too curious.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew my wife.”

“I knew her better than you think.”

A wave of anger hit me.

“Where are you?”

The person laughed again.

Then whispered:

“Ask yourself one question, Lawson.”

A pause.

“Who benefited the most when Genevieve died?”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Because suddenly, one terrifying thought entered my mind.

May you like

Maybe the person who destroyed my family wasn’t hiding.

Maybe they were waiting for me to find them.
